Earn the Public Relations Interest Project

The Houston Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America is helping Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council earn the GSUSA Public Relations Interest Project Award. This project is sponsored by PRSA Houston’s New Professionals Group, which supports public relations practitioners who are in the first five years of their careers.
To earn the GSUSA Public Relations Interest Project Award, Girl Scouts are required to complete activities like Skill Builders, where girls create press kits to publicize themselves, interview public relations practitioners about their daily responsibilities and role-play pitches as a spokesperson for a favorite cause.
Girl Scouts also are required to complete one or more service projects before earning the GSUSA Public Relations Interest Project Award. Such projects include volunteering to help a local organization publicize its services to the community or writing an article for media placement.
“PRSA Houston is committed to educating our community about the importance of our profession. We welcome Girl Scouts to learn as much as they can from our members and to consider public relations as a profession,” said Cindy Suggs, PRSA Houston Chapter President.
PRSA Houston’s New Professionals Group will coordinate requests to interview PR professionals to assist Girl Scouts with the different activity categories ( Skill Builders, Technology, Service Projects, and Career Exploration) to earn the Award.
Girls who want to earn their GSUSA Public Relations Interest Project Award (page 104 in Girl Scouts of the United States of America’s Interest Projects for Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts) are invited to contact PRSA Houston New Pros Community Service Liaison Cheyenna Smith at 713-627-2223 or csmith@piercom.com, or visit www.prsahouston.org.

Letter to the editor:
I wanted to thank all the Scouts on behalf of the National Cemetery Council of Greater Houston Inc. and the staff of the Houston National Cemetery for putting out our Avenue of Flags for the Memorial Day Ceremony 2005. It was a wonderful tribute to all our departed heroes that many Scouts joined us to remember our patriots in uniform who defended our way of life.
Hundreds of Scouts joined us on Sunday, May 29 to put out over 400 large flags throughout the cemetery grounds. Some Scouts also joined us for the program on Monday, May 31 and presented colors and/or wreaths during the ceremony.
The program was a great success and we enjoyed our usual large, enthusiastic crowd in supporting our veterans and the National Cemetery Administration.

Sincerely,

Linda Barry for
Jorge Lopez, Cemetery Director

Girl Scouts Celebrate in Austin

Austin welcomed more than 140 Senior Girl Scouts from around the state June 6. Everyone was in town with their proud loved ones to celebrate a milestone in their young lives – receipt of the Girl Scout Gold Award. GSSJC invited all local honorees who received their Gold Award status between May 2004 and April 2005. Twenty-one young women from San Jacinto Council decided to commemorate their awards by attending the Statewide Gold Award Ceremony.
The celebration was held in the House of Representatives Chamber where the floor, normally a sea of politicians, was awash with Gold, Blue (Senior Girl Scouts) and Green (Adult Girl Scouts). Guests were invited to watch the proceedings from the balcony. Featured speaker, Lark Doley, International Director of Toastmasters International, praised the Girl Scouts for their ability to lead while remaining true to their Girl Scout roots. The ceremony was followed by a reception on the lawn of the Capitol building.
Meryl-Ina K. and Shefali G., both of San Jacinto Council, were among the four Girl Scouts who received the 2005 Statewide Gold Award Scholarship. A committee consisting of Girl Scout representatives throughout Texas reviewed 30 applicants and selected these Gold Award recipients to be among the best of their peers. Each will receive a $500 scholarship to assist with college tuition. Funding is derived from the state Girl Scout license plate program.
For further information on the Gold Award process, contact Julie Deeter, Program Manager, at 713-292-0203 or jdeeter@sjgs.org .
