Host a booth at Girls Enjoying Math and Science (GEMS)

GEMS 2006 is scheduled for Saturday, February 18 at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. If you and a friend would like to host a booth and be experts for a day on a math or science topic, this is your opportunity!

Why should you host a booth?
* Learn more about a topic of interest to you.
* Work with a team to design and make an interesting exhibit.
* Meet loads of girls and other museum guests at the event.
* Get to know other booth hosts at special meetings and activities.
* Half price overnight ($20/girl) the Friday night before the event.
* Limited to the first 130 girls/adults in teams of 4 girls/1 adult.

What is a GEMS booth?
*A table measuring 8’ x 5.
* You decorate with signs and fun art for front and sides.
* One table and two chairs will be provided for each booth.
* There are no electrical outlets.
* Booth host teams are a maximum of four girls and one adult.
*Booth has two girls at the booth at all times during the event.

First meeting is Sunday, September 9 from 2-4 p.m. at the Girl Scout Office, 3110 Southwest Freeway, Houston, TX 77098.

Girls who mail in their applications receive first placement. Did you just hear about it? Bring application with you to the first meeting. First applications received, first placed.

* Attend the HMNS Earth Science Day on October 8 or Dino Day/Scout Open House on November 5 and sign up at the GEMS 2006 booth


Women’s Energy Network of Houston (WEN)

Who: High school age girls
Where: The HESS Club, 5430 Westheimer Road, Houston
When: Tuesday, September 13 from 6-9 p.m.
Cost: Free

Keynote Speaker: Sarah Edman, Manager Industrial & Commercial Marketing ConocoPhillips.

Girls will have the opportunity to:
* meet professional women from Women’s Energy Network of    Houston (WEN)
* meet representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy,    Washington, D.C.
*learn about the energy industry and career opportunities in the    energy industry
* learn about scholarships from Society of Petroleum Engineers.

From geologists to attorneys, students will engage with the professional women to learn about their chosen careers in geology, engineering, legal, public relations, accounting, land, and other disciplines.

Recent studies show the current energy workforce is close to retirement and those entering the field are primarily male. This event was planned with you in mind to:
*encourage you to consider careers in the energy industry
* guide you toward math, science and technology as you plan for    college
* educate you about the fascinating energy industry.

A separate program is planned for parents. A panel of representatives from several universities will attend with information on scholarships, curriculum and more.
