SPURS Training Information
SPURS (Super People Using Riding Skills)
training is offered to Girl Scouts who are 12 years old and
in the 7th Grade and above and adults who are interested in
learning more about horses and helping with the Equitation
Program at Camp Misty Meadows. Attending one Theory Workshop
(classroom session) and the Saturday day training at Camp
Misty Meadows is required for participation in the SPURS program.
At camp they will receive hands-on practice with the horses.
Adults taking this training will receive their theory at camp.
All adults wishing to take this training MUST follow the same
registration procedure as the girls.
Since the training at Camp Misty Meadows is an all-day workshop,
all trainees should bring a sack lunch and beverage, clearly
labeled with the attendee’s name. Small personal coolers
are okay; large ice chests cannot be accommodated due to space
restrictions.
For theory workshop date, please indicate your first and second
choice. Unless notified otherwise, attend your first choice
date.

Adults in Equitation
The Equitation
Program needs registered Girl Scout adults to volunteer in
two distinct areas of Equitation. Every potential adult who
wishes to become involved in the equitation program must have
a completed “Volunteer Application” and an approved
criminal background check on file with Council Volunteer Records
Department and be a registered Girl Scout in good standing
prior to attending the equitation training for adults.
Riding Staff:
If you care to work with horses the Council needs riding staff
to learn and then teach proper safety, horse care, and riding
skills to the Girl Scouts taking part in the program. Formal
instruction is provided as Saturday day training: one is held
in October and another session is in March. Check this section
in The Golden Link for specific training dates and information.
There may also be adult training held on different weekends
throughout the year as the need arises.
Dorm Staff:
The Equitation program also welcomes all registered adults
who may enjoy a weekend at camp with Girl Scouts 13 and older,
yet prefer not to work with horses. Every troop camping weekend
during the year, the SPURS girls need two adult unit leaders
as dorm staff, one of whom must be a currently certified First
Aider.
