Do You Canoe?

Do you want to take your troop canoeing at Camps Agnes Arnold, Robinwood, or Whispering Pines? Are you interested in learning the correct stroke technique for canoeing? Register for the Red Cross Fundamentals of Canoeing Course!

Who: Girls ages 12 and up and adults
Where: Camp Robinwood
When: October 7-9; Friday 7:30 p.m.-Sunday 3 p.m.
Bring: Permission slip, Medical Form, Adult Medical Form, PFD
(if you have one), clothes and personal belongings for the weekend.
Min/Max: 10/30
Cost: $45 per person, includes lodging and 5 meals (Saturday breakfast through Sunday lunch)

Note: The Red Cross Fundamentals of Canoeing course covers the basics for canoeing, including introduction to the sport, equipment, boating safety basic techniques, strokes and rescues. This course teaches students to be safe on and around the water while learning to canoe in a flat water environment. It teaches self-rescue skills and rescue of others. This is the first step for girls to take, if they would like to participate in canoe trips. Prerequisite: Swimming Ability – Girls must have a Red Cross Level III swim card or equivalent and GSSJC Safe Boating Test. Adults must be comfortable in deep water and pass the Safe Boating Test.

GOT CAMP?

Leaders – here’s a great activity to start your troop off for the year, not to mention a great way to introduce your girls to camp. Enjoy making ice cream and crafts, singing songs, playing games and learning a new camp skill. There’s even a scavenger hunt hike to show you around camp.

Love, Hug and Groom in Nacogdoches

This program is offered to individual girls or troops in GSSJC who live in the Lufkin/Nacogdoches area. All girl program levels (Daisy Girl Scouts through seniors in high school) may participate. Girls receive an introduction to horse care and hands-on grooming opportunity with camp horses during 45-minute periods at Camp Whispering Pines. Sessions are available beginning at 1 p.m. on October 29.
