STUDIO 2B destinations

Want to
…travel to new places?
…learn about new careers?
…explore the outdoors?
…form new friendships?

Then you may be interested in STUDIO2B destinations! Experience new things, develop new skills and gain a sense of empowerment.
A STUDIO 2B destination is your chance to go somewhere new, do something different and meet people from everywhere you can imagine! A STUDIO 2B destination is any experience, regardless of distance or length of time, which provides a girl 11-17 with an opportunity to expand her personal experience beyond her everyday scope. Events typically range in length from two to ten days.

STUDIO 2B destinations focus on:
  • Skill-based experiences that bring girls 11-17 together from around the world.
  • Networking, mentoring, or service opportunities for individuals and groups.
  • The use of available technology to connect girls to events and to each other.
  • Regional events (such as leadership summits, conferences, and girl training).
  • Internship and apprenticeship programs and service travel opportunities.
  • Individual national leadership opportunities.

With the Web as an information source, event descriptions are posted in clear and expansive, teen-friendly language and the design makes events appealing. Moreover, because travel opportunities are on listed the Web, event details are updated and events are added throughout the year, on a monthly basis. Check out www.studio2b.org/escape/destinations today!

Extreme Careers
by A. Jeanna Y., Girl Scout

Last summer, I got an e-mail from my troop leader about a chance to go to New York for five days through a program called STUDIO 2B. At the time, I had never heard of STUDIO 2B and was completely unfamiliar with the destinations program. But the idea of spending five days in New York meeting with girls from all over the country to learn about careers in science was just too good to pass up. After completing the application, which included writing an essay, answering questions, and obtaining several recommendations, I was very excited to be accepted and before I knew it, I was off to New York. It was as much as I hoped for and more. There were 30 other girls in my group–a group that was small enough to meet everyone, but big enough to be very diverse.
The week was packed with activities to give us a taste of many different science-related careers such as astronomy, geology, and environmental engineering. The busy yet fun filled days were filled with lectures about everything from bio-medical engineering and prosthetics to patenting inventions. Each day, a speaker made a presentation relating to a hot topic in their field–issues that would directly affect us if we were to pursue that field of science. The talk was followed by an engaging and fun activity where we put the skills of that job to the test.
While most of the presentations took place inside the Girl Scouts facility, one trip took us to a forensic laboratory in New York. This was one of the most interesting experiences of the trip. The highly trained personnel offered detailed information about how they went about examining a crime scene and how they used high-tech instruments to analyze the data, giving a sneak peek into the real world of criminal investigation. After the tour we participated as a team in a mock crime scene modeled after a real-life crime. The objective was to determine what happened by using deductive reasoning and observation.
After I returned, I shared what I had experienced and learned at a nearby Girl Scout summer camp. A troop of 20 Juniors participated in my presentation. We did several activities about astronomy and geology, and I told them about the opportunities they would get, skills they would acquire, and the people they would meet through the STUDIO 2B program in the years to come.
Going to New York through the STUDIO 2B program was a great experience for me and I’m really glad I went. I learned about careers with which I wasn’t very familiar, and got the opportunity to talk one-on-one with professionals.
