Sara A.
informed people about Jamaica and the children who live in orphanages there. After learning about Jamaica from a mentor, Austin talked to Girl Scout troops about the country. She also encouraged people to donate items that she sent to the orphanage.
Hannah B. held a theatre workshop at her church. She directed kids ages 4-13 in a play. Barnes held rehearsals and a Saturday workshop where they built the sets, props, and costumes and learned about theatre makeup. Kay B.held a breakfast with Santa for 50 children at Kingwood Church of Christ. They made crafts, played games, decorated cookies, and took pictures with Santa. Each child brought three canned food items for their “entry fee” that Kay then donated to her church’s pantry. Shruti B. organized a book drive and collected 273 children books to donate to a nursery school in Nigeria. She also asked students at her boarding school in England to write their own short stories and plays and made then into a book. Bhat also visited the school for a week to assist the teachers.
Catherine C.
organized a donations drive and made holiday stockings for the Houston Area Women’s Center. Several Junior and Cadette troops helped her make the stockings.
Mary F. taught homeshooled students how to do container gardening. She also taught them the dangers of gardening with pesticides and how to be environmentally friendly. The group planted a garden for a local library. Laura F. took charge of the swimming portion of a camp for 130 inner-city Conroe girls, many of whom did not know how to swim or were not comfortable in deep water. She showed the group basic skills, the four basic strokes, and CPR. Sarah F. led a group that demolished a pool and bathhouse at Lake Houston State Park. After the 23 people spent 219 man hours, the park can now propose other uses for the area and it is not a safety hazard anymore.
Elizabeth J. planned and carried out a two-day poetry workshop for third and fourth graders. She taught them how to write sensory poems, haiku, free verse, riddles, limericks, and “If I” poems. Katie M.
organized others to make 50 fleece blankets for cancer patients at M.D. Anderson Hospital. Once the blankets were completed, she attached a homemade card with a picture of the person that made the blanket.
Marie M. organized files of scholarships into a list by due date. She gathered other scholarship information and gave a
presentation at her school and also created a Web site with the information.
Christine O. organized music students from her high school to perform at a retirement home. After the performance the residents were invited to do a craft with the students.
Lauren Q.
planned a pet parade and pet awareness day. Everyone who entered the contest recieved homemade dog treats. Contestants were asked to make a food or pet supply donation that she then delivered to the Houston SPCA.
Katie S.
led a group in making 121 fleece baby blankets and collected maternity clothes for Birthright International. She also educated others about the Birthright organization.
Jaclyn Y.
planned an event for The Kids Unlimited Foundation, a group that works with children who have cancer. She organized four areas of interest consisting of camping and backpacking, diversity, social skills, and car care along with two craft projects.
