Gifts With Heart

With help from girls and leaders of GSSJC and other community groups, Gifts with Heart 2005 has a challenging goal of making 7,200 toys for needy children in the metropolitan Houston area. Lowe’s was a major partner and contributor to Gifts with Heart 2004, providing supplies, materials and a space to make 2,000 holiday gifts. This year, the home improvement retailer continues to support the program by donating its Build and Grow projects to be assembled, decorated and transformed into holiday gifts for underprivileged children.
In March 2005, the gift making for the 2005 project began with the GSSJC La Porte Service Unit’s Spring Break Camp. June through November 2005, GSSJC girls, leaders, and parents may attend workshops at many of the different locations of our partner Lowe’s. Workshops introduce girls to priming and painting wood and gift-wrapping the final product. On Friday, November 18, the gift-making process will conclude with the help of the participants attending the Houston Museum of Natural Science Girl Scout Overnight.
GSSJC girls who participate in making the projects are invited to a December Gift Exchange where girls will present gifts to recipients. Houston Mayor Bill White and Houston’s Fox 26 News sponsor this event. Melissa Wilson, 9 p.m. news anchor, will be the Mistress of Ceremonies.
