Serving others at all times...

Why do you think service is important?
Melissa Z

I think service is important because you help the less fortunate. For example, I love throwing holiday parties at this one particular battered women shelter. We bring them food and entertain the little kids. For a couple of hours they don’t have to worry about anything. Their smiles fill you with great satisfaction and pride. Also, I like visiting nursing homes. Visiting the elders gives you an idea what to look forward to in the future. Not only does it open the communication lines at home, but you go and have a good time with them. They love the Shortbread cookies, so once a year we have a tea party. You get so attached – they open their hearts and tell you about their families. One time, we met this senior citizen who served in World War II, and just his conversation was so fascinating. I always think about him.

Service builds character and helps you be a better citizen. I feel I should give back to those in my community who have helped me be who I am today. Like helping at blood drives because without a blood transfusion I would not be alive today. My favorite project was making preemie blankets for the hospital I was born in and stayed the first eight weeks of my life. It was something close to my heart and I always wanted to do something for the hospital.

Earth Conscious Girl Scouts at it again!

Troop #4484 collected items that would normally have been trashed and donated
them to those in need:

*800 unopened kid’s meal toys to Marvin Zindler’s medical mission
* 421 BoxTops for Education to our school
* 54 pairs of used eyeglasses to our church’s medical mission

At our meetings throughout the 2004-05 school year, we collected these items,
then donated them to the organizations at the end of the year. For every item donated, girls earned points and the patrol with the most points at the end of the year planned an end of the year party – we had a lot of fun!
Two of our girls earned their Bronze award by having a coat drive to collect 175 coats to donate to St. Vincent DePaul Society for the One Warm Coat Project.
These girls learned that trash isn’t always trash!

Troop #2360 springs into song
by Philippa J, Troop #2360

Junior Girl Scout Troop #2360 visited two retirement homes to entertain the staff and residents and as part of the Bronze Award requirements.
The Bronze Award is a project Girl Scouts think up and work at to demonstrate they know and live by the Girls Scout Promise and Law.
The residents watched as the girls performed a series of acts called ‘Spring Into Song.’
At Brighton Gardens they passed out sugar-free candy after the M&M song. A one hundred-year old resident enjoyed the show so much she played “On Top Of Old Smokey” on the piano as the girls joined in.
At Belmont Village the troop sang “Happy Birthday” to three seniors whose birthdays were in August or the coming months. Despite technical difficulties with the portable stereo, soloists Whitney F., Jessica O. and Sarah K. each sang a show tune. Whitney’s humorous song, “Doin’ What Comes Naturally” had most of the audience laughing, while Sarah had a few people dancing to “I Will Survive.” The audience was really interested in Jessica’s solo, “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” as they leaned closely to listen.
The residents gave a loud applause to Talor Pentecost after her flute solo, “The Fox and the Phoenix,” and they recognized Whitney F.’s piano solo “Rock Around the Clock.” The crowd enjoyed the classic piece, “On Top of Old Smokey” performed by Kathryn T. at the piano. The crowd complemented Philippa J. for her trumpet solo, “Red River Valley.”
Catherine-Elizabeth W. saved the show by helping the girls backstage and with the props. Haley G.and Amy S. were naturals as the M.C.’s.
The residents smiled when all the girls performed “Camp Granada” with their clipboards, whistles and bandanas.
Although she is not in Troop #2360, Brownie Haley Shoebotham was credited for holding up the title signs for each act and the intermission sign when things went wrong.
The girls loved performing and said a big thank you to the residents for watching.
