Hobby Center Volunteers

Are you interested in becoming a volunteer and joining the Hobby Center’s cast of over 1,200 volunteers? Volunteers take pride in their work at the Hobby Center’s venues – Sarofim Hall and Zilkha Hall located in Houston’s vibrant Theater District.

What do volunteers do?

Volunteers work in a variety of positions: ushers, ticket takers, door directors, elevator assistants, wheelchair assistants, tour guides, and assist guests with performance and important venue information.

What type of commitment is expected of volunteers?

Volunteers are asked to be at least 16 years of age and work 4 to 5 hours during the same time slot each week as scheduled. Volunteer positions require a person to be able to stand for up to two hours. Each new volunteer must attend orientation and follow-up training sessions.

When do volunteers work?

Volunteers receive advance schedules of their assignments. Matinee crews may be scheduled anytime between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday - Sunday. Evening crews may be scheduled anytime between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. Tuesday - Sunday. Special event times may vary.

Where do volunteers park?

Transportation and parking are the responsibility of each volunteer. Event parking is $5 for all Theater District parking garages.

What is the volunteer uniform?

The Hobby Center provides to each volunteer a black bowtie that must be returned to the volunteer locker room at the conclusion of volunteer duty. The volunteer’s own black slacks/skirts, solid white dress shirt with collars or tux shirt, and black shoes (no open toe shoes) complete the uniform. You have the option of wearing a black jacket which you provide.

Do volunteers see Hobby Center Events for free?

Volunteering is not a “free” ticket to see shows. Although volunteers working in the theaters during performances may often see all or part of a performance, there is no guarantee. Guests may not accompany ushers to the theaters during their working hours.

The Hobby Center is proud of its dedicated and invaluable team of volunteers, who help us to entertain over five hundred thousand guests annually. Each year the Center celebrates these volunteers with their own Volunteer Recognition Event.

For more information about joining this team, contact Volunteer Coordinator, Ric Perdue, at hobbyvolunteer@hcpa.com.
