Leader-In-Training
GSUSA Leadership Project

The Leader-In-Training (LIT) program was created to help Girl Scouts acquire the skills and confidence necessary to assist with a group of younger girls and hold future leadership positions within and outside of Girl Scouting.

Prerequisite: Registered Girl Scout completed 9th grade
and interest in working with younger girls in Girl Scouting

Training: Completion of: LIT Orientation, Basic Leader Training, Program Level training, Troop Observation

LIT Orientation – This is a self-study course. To secure your copy, click on the Leader Resources folder for 11-17-year-old Girl Scouts on www.gssjc.org to download this information, or contact the Program Department to obtain a copy.

Basic Leader Training (BLT) – available through a girl’s service unit.

Program Level Training (4 hours) – Daisy, Brownie, Junior, or Group – trainings are scheduled throughout the year in locations around the council. Check The Golden Link or go online at www.gssjc.org to the trainings section.

Following completion of all the above trainings, an LIT candidate is eligible to wear the GSUSA LIT pin. She must submit a completed “LIT Intent to Intern” form at any Council Shop in order to purchase the pin.

The LIT must spend 25 hours in an internship, working directly with the leaders of a troop or group. One of the leaders should complete a LIT Mentor Leader Agreement and mail it to the address listed on the agreement form. Information about being a Mentor Leader is also given in the “11- to 17-Year-Old Girl Scouts” folder under Leader Resources on the Council Web site, www.gssjc.org.

Upon completion of her 25-hour internship, the LIT is eligible to wear the GSUSA LIT patch. She must submit a completed LIT Internship Log and Evaluation form at any Council Shop in order to purchase the patch.

Counselor-In-Training
GSUSA Girl Leadership Project

GSUSA’s Girl Leadership Project Counselor-In-Training (CIT) encompasses 12 hours of core training, followed by an optional week of internship in either the day camp or resident camp setting. During the weekend training, girls will participate in learning/activity sessions conducted by certified Council Trainers on: personality identification, Girl Scout principles in the resident camp environment, personal leadership styles, resident camp structure, camper discipline and anger management, expectations for CIT’s, acceptance of diversity, safety guidelines and awareness, camper age characteristics, effective listening techniques, how to teach an activity, and outdoor skills.

At the end of the weekend, each girl receives the prestigious GSUSA CIT pin. She can then complete an optional one-week internship at a day camp or resident camp session. (Detailed information about the internship opportunities will be given during the CIT Core Training Weekends.)
