Where common Gold Award beliefs are labeled myth or reality…

Belief 1: I need to earn the Silver Award before I can earn the Gold Award. MYTH! No, you do not have to earn the Silver Award to be eligible to earn the Gold Award. The Silver Award gives a Girl Scout a good framework of leadership and service so it may help her transition to the Gold Award process more easily.

Information Session for GSUSA Silver Award

Who: Girls 11-14 (must be in 6th -9th grade) No tagalongs.

NOTE: This orientation will also be beneficial to girls who may already have started working on components of the Silver Award under pre-Summer 2004 guidelines but who have not reached the project step. These girls have 1-2 years to complete under the previous guidelines, but must follow the new guidelines for the final project.

What: A three-hour Girl Scout Silver Award Information Session and Q&A session designed for girls.

When and where:
October 8, 9 a.m.-noon Girl Scout Center, Houston
October 15, 9 a.m.-noon, Lufkin Service Center

Why: Learn about the NEW guidelines for the Girl Scout Silver Award. Participants will receive information on: how to select Interest Projects, identifying leadership opportunities, finding resources for career exploration and working toward an appropriate Silver Award Project. Written materials will include additional GSSJC-required paperwork as well as a new event planning guide for girls wishing to hold a community event as their final project.

Bring: All girls attending must bring a completed permission form (F-204); medical history (F-185). All participants should bring a pen and notebook

Register: Use Program Registration Form, Girls’ individual names must be provided on registration–no registrations will be accepted with just a leader’s name and “x” girls.

Gold Award Orientation Dates

All girls who plan to earn their Gold Award must attend Gold Award Orientation sometime in the 18 months prior to submitting their Gold Award application. Additional training dates and locations may be added as needed. Upcoming trainings will be:

  • Saturday, November 5, 10 a.m.-noon, Lufkin Service Center
  • Saturday, December 10, 10 a.m.-noon, Girl Scout Center

Gold Award Advisory Committee Meetings

These meetings are held monthly to review initial Gold Award Applications and Final Reports. All meetings will be on Sundays from 2-5 p.m. in RM 210. Girls who want to present their initial or final project reports at the meeting should contact the Gold Award Coordinator prior to the meeting date. (Note: Presenting an application or final report is optional.) Remember that all initial Gold Award Applications and Final Reports are due by the first of each month to ensure review at that month’s GAAC Meeting. Dates are as follows: October 16, November 13, December 4

March 17, 2006 Deadline for The Emerald Circle Gold Award Merit Scholarship Application

May 2006 Deadline for the Statewide Gold Award Scholarship Application.
