Is any training offered to girls and/or adults for this level training?

Is the training mandatory?

For adults as part of Junior Leadership training

Coming Fall 2005: Home study for girls

Mandatory for GIRLS.
Gold Award Orientation (for girls)is conducted every other month at council. (check The Golden Link)

Home study is available for girls IF they cannot come to a council session. (check with J. Deeter)

Optional Adult sessions held at same time as Girl orientations (adults do NOT sit in on girl sessions).

Is the award just about a project?
No. The four B’s allow candidate to explore the world and herself before she undertakes the project

What type of project should a girl choose?
A project that benefits Girl Scouting or the community

Can the project be Girl Scout related?

CAN do a Girl Scout "related" project but it should have a strong community element involved.

Reason: the focus should be (andalways was SUPPOSED to be) on community work, not "for ourselves."

Who should choose the project that a girl does?

Can an entire troop do a single project?
Possible, but notrecommended. Each girl must spend 15 hours on the project.
Possible, but highly discouraged (each girl must spend 40 hours; therefore, 4 girls working together would need a 160 hour project, far too large for this level)
No. Project is to reflect an individual girl’s interests/passions and showcase her leadership skills
Are collection drives (e.g. food, clothing, baby items) okay?
Yes
Yes, but the collection drive SHOULDbe tied to a larger effort.

Who approves a girl’s project?
Troop leader
Troop leader, after a Project Review Request form (F493-C) is completed and submitted at least 3 weeks before beginning project to the Council Silver Award Committee. (D. Henley). Reviews four key aspects.

What do I say when I’m asked about the appropriateness of a project?

Who “signs off” a girl as having completed all parts of the particular award?

Is there any “completion paperwork” for a girl to obtain the pin?
Yes. Girl completes report form in the GS handbook/F-489, turns in when purchasing award at a GS Council shop.
Yes. Girl must complete the “Silver Award Report Form (F493) and attach a copy of the approval letter, turn in to Council Shop as authorization to purchase award.
Yes. Girl will have received instructions and all paperwork when she attended Gold Award Orientation or successfully completed the home study version.
If a girl has completed her Bronze Award, can she begin the Silver Award?
A girl who is at least 11 years old may work on the first 4 steps but cannot begin work on the Project Step until she is at least 12 years old OR in the 7th grade.
