Sketch of Adult Zebra with a Young ZebraZink the Zebra

Main Entry: Zink
Pronunciation: zinc
Function: name of a friendly zebra
Usage: fondly
Etymology: created by Kelly, www.zinkthezebra.org

Zink lives in the Lipis Jungle and has spots instead of stripes. Zebras treat Zink differently because she looks different. A special young girl named Kelly Weil who was also treated differently because of the way she looked on the outside created Zink. But Kelly knew that it’s what is on the inside that counts...Everyone is different and that’s what makes everyone special! Zink stands for understanding, respect, compassion and acceptance to spread the word that regardless of interests, education, cultural background, economic status, level of ability, and/or physical differences, everyone wants to feel accepted.

Zink the Zebra is the main character of a compassionate story written by 11-year-old Kelly Weil before she died of cancer in 1993. Kelly’s story, Zink the Zebra - A Special Tale, is about a zebra named Zink who has spots instead of stripes. Zink questions why she is treated differently just because she looks different on the outside. She knows that on the inside, she has the same hopes, dreams and feelings of any other zebra. Through Zink, Kelly conveys the powerful message that all people, regardless of interests, education, cultural background, economic status, level of ability, and/or physical differences, are more alike than they are different.

Zink the Zebra Foundation is dedicated to creating and implementing diversity educational programs for children to help teach them about understanding, respect, compassion, and acceptance of others AND help children build self-esteem, provide diversity awareness and promote self-acceptance. The Foundation’s goal is to help children learn that what they say and the actions they take have a positive or negative effect on others. Zink’s lovable character provides a powerful role model to help children, early in their lives, understand the importance of being compassionate, respectful and accepting of other people.

Program Aide Core Training

The GSSJC Program Department developed the 6-hour GSUSA Program Aide Core training for girls in 7th grade or above in an easy-to-deliver format that is fun AND informative for girls! The best part is – you can train the girls in your troop/group on YOUR schedule at troop meetings, service unit events and camping weekends.

The Program Aide Core training is divided into six 45-minute activity sessions in a game format to ensure that girls receive the necessary information in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.

The resource kit includes:

  • full instructions for facilitating the sessions
  • all the training and game materials
  • masters for copying girl handouts/training aides

Once your girls have completed the 6-hour core training, they’ll be eligible to attend a four hour Specialty training to complete the GSUSA Program Aide training and purchase the GSUSA Program Aide pin at any Girl Scout Shop. Program Aide Specialty Resource Kits are being developed this fall. When ready, information will be posted on the CIN at www.gssjc.org.
