Dare to Share
October is a great time to become better acquainted with
Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scout Movement. And
as you get to know her, especially through her own words,
you will appreciate, even more, the contributions she has
made to every generation of girls and women since 1912. “Ours
is a circle of friends united by ideals,” Juliette proclaimed.
Born on October 31, 1860, Juliette Low was truly an extraordinary
woman…a woman astonishingly ahead of her times. “Daisy,”
as she was affectionately known to family and friends, channeled
her energies and resources into establishing something wonderful
for “the girls of Savannah, and all of the United States
and all of the world.” That something wonderful was,
and still is, an opportunity for every girl to develop self-reliance,
resourcefulness, active citizenship and service to others.
“My purpose,” Juliette Low affirmed, “…
(is) to go on with my heart and soul devoting all my energies
to Girl Scouts, and heart and hand with them, we will make
our lives and lives of the future girls happy, healthy and
holy.”
The mighty values and traditions of Girl Scouting continue
to keep the girls and adults of GSSJC
“happy, healthy and holy.” Participants at the
Membership Development Conference in July had the opportunity
to share their most meaningful Girl Scout value or tradition.
Heartfelt responses burst forth, a powerful legacy for “the
first Girl Scout,” Juliette Low. So, here’s to
you, Daisy, as we celebrate your 145th birthday! You have
been so generous in sharing your gifts with us! |
