GSSJC offers Home Study trainings because many who volunteer for a troop/group leadership position have professional and personal commitments that keep them from attending regularly scheduled trainings, or you may be a visual learner – someone who prefers self-directed study that focuses on reading the material.

The content of the home study and classroom course is identical: all that’s missing from the home study version are group activities and provisions for sharing with others as well as having an experienced trained facilitator to address your questions and concerns. Home study trainings are designed for individuals to proceed at her/his own pace at one sitting or over several days time. They are best done alone and not in a group. If participants choose to work together, each must purchase her/his own home study kit to receive course credit.

The cost of the home study course includes a workbook specifically designed for independent study. The Basic Leadership Training is the only course that includes a video. The video is provided in DVD format, but VHS is available if requested. Before a new leader can begin meeting with a troop, she/he must complete the BLT course. BLT is also a prerequisite for all program leadership trainings. The recommended time frame to complete program leadership training is 90 days after appointment. Home Study Procedure

1. Complete the Home Study Course Request form 0-638(T) below.
2. Mail in the completed form and fee to the training registrar at the Girl Scout Center. If requesting more than one course, please submit the appropriate fees. Do not send cash. Cash purchases can only be made in person to a Council Girl Scout Shop.
3. Once received, the training registrar will mail the home study kit and instructions to the individual. Leader guides and girl handbooks are not provided in the kit, but can be purchased through the Council shop.
4. After finishing the course, complete and return the Home Study Evaluation and Checkpoint Quiz within two weeks to the training registrar at the Girl Scout Center. Please keep the course materials for future reference. Upon receipt of the evaluation and quiz, the training registrar will mail the answer sheet to the quiz, a signed training strip and a Yellow Apple Recognition patch. This will meet the initial requirements for leadership training.
