How can I participate?

Be an expert for a day, show others what you’ve learned about a math, science, engineering, or technology concept or an exciting scientist, mathematician, engineer, or inventor!

  1. Be a Rover: scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, or have a concept
GEMS Rovers select a person or a concept and:
  • Learn about their person/concept
  • Design and make costume/props to wear to reflect the topic
  • Develop a monologue to share 5-10 points about the topic
  • Perform that monologue at the Friday night set up for staff
  • Be assigned 4, 30 minute sessions on Saturday
During your session, you’ll perform as the person/concept and:
  • Walk the scientist’s trail around the area
  • Speak to 15 or more Girl Scouts individually or in small groups about your topic

Rovers can be individual girls or teams up to four girls. An adult needs to be on site for each team. If the same troop has a ‘lab’, that adult can serve for both teams. Within a team, girls may select the same topic or different ones. Session assignments will be made with the buddy system in mind. Details available later.

  1. Be ‘In the Lab’!
  • Explore Girl Scout earned awards, GSUSA and Council’s Own, that girls could earn by visiting your ‘lab’
  • Design free or inexpensive hands on activities based on the requirements that could be completed at your ‘lab’
  • Design props/decorations for your lab (table)
  • GEMS patch Make a costume/props to
    wear to reflect the topic
  • Develop a script with roles for each lab staff to fulfill when visited
  • Be assigned a location to staff for the four hours of the event at the museum on Saturday
  • Perform your script at the Friday night set up for the GEMS staff

Survey girls to see those who may have an interest in hosting a booth of four girls and one adult. Labs have a minimum of two girls at all times during the event.

As a large troop or with just a few girls:
  • Select a math, science, engineering, or technology topic, such as requirements for GSUSA awards, GSSJC patches or other Girl Scout councils’ patches or awards or a person or a concept in these areas.
  • Explore your topic
  • Return to a future troop meeting with ideas for hands on, inexpensive ways you can share your knowledge
  • Describe what an interesting booth/costume/props looks like to make girls want to stop and learn
  • Register to be a Rover or host a lab.
Why should I want to be a rover or lab host?
  • Learn more about a topic of interest to you.
  • Work with a team to design and make an interesting exhibit.
  • Meet loads of girls and other museum guests at the event.
  • Get to know other booth hosts at meetings and activities.
  • Earn service and/or leadership hours
  • Half price overnight ($20/girl) the Friday night before the event.
Labs include:
  • A table measuring 8’ x 5.
  • One table and 2 chairs will be provided
  • Save energy – no electrical outlets
