Troop #5825 earns timely Interest Project to “Be Prepared”

Tracy M., Kaytlin H. and Grace M. of Senior Girl Scout Troop #5825Jaime C., Rachel L., Holly H., Kaytlin H., Tracy M., and Grace M. from Senior Girl Scout Troop #5825 earned the Emergency Preparedness Interest Project. The girls attend Cypress-Springs High School, and are involved in swimming, softball, drama, band, and cheerleading.

The interest project enables girls to prepare themselves through practice and knowledge so that they can take care of themselves and others in an emergency situation. Requirements include completing a basic first-aid course and a CPR course, learning about the mission of disaster relief agencies, such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Red Cross, and finding out how to be prepared when an emergency occurs at home, school, or on vacation. Completing a service project is also a component of the interest project.

Troop #5825 asked Ms. Julie Kelton, an emergency room nurse from Memorial Hospital, to speak to the troop.

Their service project was to make Emergency Preparedness packets with information including the following material – contact information for Poison Control and FEMA, as well as other emergency phone numbers; and information about protection against fire, tsumanis, and tornadoes, as well as Disaster Preparedness Information. The troop donated the packets to Brownie Troop #5058 in the Bear Creek Service Unit.

For additional information on Emergency Preparedness visit the FEMA Web site at www.usfa.fema.gov. Information about the Emergency Preparedness Interest Project can be found in Interest Projects for girls 11-17. Editor’s Note: GSSJC also offers the Together We Prepare Patch Program (GSSJC F-23) for all levels of Girl Scouting. The information about this program is located in Publications and Forms at www.gssjc.org.

Kudos

Photo of Sam W.Samantha W. received The Prudential Spirit Of Community Award last April. A ceremony was held at the Junior League to honor the recipients. She was nominated by her middle school, Cornerstone Academy for volunteer work she had done pertaining to her Silver Award Project. Samantha collected supplies for Citizens For Animal Protection( a pet shelter in west Houston ) for several weeks at her school. She arranged a “pet” rally at her school with the CAP spokesperson and spokesdog. Weekly, she delivered the supplies to CAP. With the help of a teacher an on-going supply drive was continued the rest of the school year at Cornerstone. The shelter is important to Samantha because her two dogs are from CAP.

Samantha was a Cadette in Troop #12652 at the time. She is now a Senior Girl Scout working on her Gold Award.
Congratulations to the following Cadette members of Troop #12652, Harmony Service Unit for completing their Silver Awards – Janet B., Holly M., Jillian G. and Samantha W.

Treelake complex grows by 57 acres

Members of the Steitz family and representatives from Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council are pictured at the offices of Baker Botts after the documents were completed transferring the final 57 acres of property adjacent to the Treelake complex to GSSJC. These are the last two of four parcels of land that the family has entrusted to the Council. A total of 100 acres has been added to the Treelake Complex in Conroe, increasing the program possibilities for girls.
