Hurricane Update

As I sit down to write this article, it is the week following Hurricane Rita. It has been a whirlwind. We are tired and weary from the hurricane preparations and the aftermath, and we are bracing for what will certainly be a lengthy recovery, primarily for the east Texas part of our Council. We are also exceptionally proud of the response from our membership and from our sister Girl Scouts throughout the country. Some of their stories are featured at www.gssjc.org. If you have a story to share, please e-mail it to us at hurricaneaid@sjgs.org. If you are looking for service projects, the Web site will also give you some service ideas. Girl Scouts are truly living the Girl Scout Promise, and we are so proud of you!

We were able to assess the damage to most of our property very quickly. The one exception is our Beaumont Service Center. The following is a summary of the damage we incurred from Hurricane Rita:

  • One platform tent, part of the bike barn and about 15 bikes were damaged by falling trees at Camp Agnes Arnold.
  • Three cabins, a gazebo, a walkway and a kitchen shelter were damaged by falling trees at Camp Whispering Pines.
  • Other camps had a lot of debris from falling trees and some minor damage to fences.
  • We believe that the Beaumont Service Center suffered significant damage, but as of this writing we have not been allowed into the area to survey that property. Check the Web site for additional information.

You will be proud to know that the Girl Scout facilities were called into service as part of both Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita relief efforts. More than 350 relief workers were housed at Girl Scout camps in areas where hotel/motel space was not available. If you drove by our 3000 Southwest Freeway building, you probably noticed all of the activity there. This site was used by the American Red Cross as a base of operations for the national staff and volunteers being flown into Houston for the relief effort.

It is most unfortunate that our area has had this calamity, but in the true Girl Scout spirit we will help one another and give service as needed.
