It would have to be
Camp Agnes Arnold because it’s the first camp I went
to and it was my first camp my daughter attended. And I was
able to be her leader, as well!
Robin Stecher, Troop #5589
Our favorite camp is Camp Misty Meadows because the cabins
are cool and horses are there. There’s great hiking,
and it’s close to Camp Agnes Arnold. We’ve been
there when it has really been cold. We’re going back
soon when it’s still hot enough to swim. And horseback
riding is on our agenda, as well.
Terry Ford, Cadette Troop #5458
My favorite camp is Whispering Pines. Although
I have only visited there once, for Summer Carousel, my troop
had the best time at this camp. It was really relaxing, far
away from Houston, out into the Piney Woods. We stayed in
a cabin unit, which was a treat for my girls. There was a
people washer to keep the girls and adults cool in the summertime
heat. We got to experience the rope assisted trail that was
not available at any other camps then. I’ve always wanted
to go back again. I’ve thought about taking advantage
of the family camping, but haven’t been able to fit
that in yet.

What is my favorite camp? That’s really a tough choice,
but I’d have to say Camp Agnes Arnold. There is so much
opportunity for different activities and programs there –
swimming, archery, fishing, hiking and nature study. With
easy access to horseback riding at Camp Misty Meadows and
the Ropes Course at Camp Silver Springs, every level of troop
can have a great outdoor experience. The facilities are nice
with everything from cabins to tents to primitive sites available,
but the treehouses make it extra special. We always have a
lot of fun there!

Camp Casa Mare is very relaxing next to the
water; the weather is cooler – humid, but cooler! I
love to sit on the swings in the back of the lodge and feel
the cool breeze flow toward me, listen to the birds and the
waves and watch each wave, as it crashes hard and then rolls
softly onto the sandy shore. Misty Meadows is also neat because
I love to ride the horses, especially when we go on the trail
ride in the woods.

It’s hard to pick just one.
Each camp has great memories for me and my troops. Arnold
has such fond memories for many personal reasons. It was the
first GSSJC
camp I went to when I first moved to Houston in 1975. I was
the first aider for a service unit weekend and my newlywed
husband went along on that trip. It was his first exposure
to Girl Scouting! My daughter, Laura, went to Camp Arnold
for the first time at the very young age of 5 weeks! It was
the first camp I took her troop to as Brownies and the last
they went to as graduating Seniors. It’s where I watched
Kenna’s Gold Award project come to completion, as Hipper
was delivered and painted in 2002. I took the Mason Creek
Singers there to dedicate the new lodge. I have taken the
Take Note Choir there for retreats, and it’s where we
teach songs to hundreds of girls a year. I’ve been there
when it’s 110 in the shade and everyone had to go home
because it got so cold! We have danced Strut Miss Lucy so
vigorously that we knew the floor of the old lodge was going
to cave in any second, and have danced it many times in the
new lodge, too! I’ve probably walked every inch of that
camp in the dark on rambles, hunts or just checking on “my
girls” over the years. And I hope to be checking on
‘my girls’ there for many, many more!
Beth Watkins, Mason Creek
My favorite camp is Camp Misty Meadows because
of the horses! I am in S.P.U.R.S. and love being around the
horses. To listen to the leaders and girls who come up there
to ride, you realize that a lot of girls do not have access
to a horse. At Camp Misty Meadows, they get to see a horse
up close, actually get to touch one and get to ride one. The
joy in their eyes can never be replaced!

Our girls are in the 8th grade
and we have been a troop since 2nd grade. I constantly remind
them how lucky we are to have the awesome camps that we do.
The last time we camped was at Silver Springs and participated
in the ROPES course, hiked over to Camp Agnes Arnold to see
the new fishing village and Camp Misty Meadows to see the
baby horse. I polled the girls and here is what they said:
Camp Casa Mare, because I love the smell of the sea there
– Alex
Camp Casa Mare, because it’s clean and I like how the
dorms are set up; it’s not hectic and I like to follow
the wooden deck around
– Katherine
Camp Casa Mare because they always have good food –
Megan
Camp Casa Mare because of the fire circle by the bay –

All of the camps are my favorites! Camp Casa
Mare, the steady bay breezes and it’s near Galveston,
sea turtles, NASA, Armand Bayou and the Kemah Boardwalk! Camp
Misty Meadows, the dorms and the horses! And SPURS, of course!
Camp Agnes Arnold, the deer and the trails! Camp Robinwood,
the dock on the lake where the girls watch water spiders and
more for hours! And, at all of them, the wonderful Camp Rangers!
