Trainers travel through the
decades at weekend event

Sixty-three trainers enjoyed workshops, food, and fellowship at the annual Trainers’ Weekend January 29-30. The theme was carried out as they enjoyed a jukebox filled with oldies but goodies and popcorn with Tammy and the Bachelor on Friday night. A special thanks goes to the volunteer committee for all their hard work on the event.
Saturday was filled with enrichment trainings such as Give ‘em the Pickle, 40 Assets, and Climbing Cogs Ladder. Following lunch, the trainers were presented with certificates of appreciation for training in 2004. Fourteen Apprentice level trainers were advanced to Trainer, one Trainer level was advanced to Experienced level, and one Experienced level was advanced to Master trainer. The Adult Development Department honored Rusty McCrory for 40 Years of Service as a trainer and Frances Browning, Rosemary Chaudior, and Beverly “Bunny” Higgins for 20 Years of Service.
Special department awards were also presented. The Above and Beyond Award went to five trainers who have gone above and beyond their duties and given outstanding service to the Adult Development Department in 2004. They are: Diana Artale, Linda Cacciotti, Suzie Cunningham Davis, Carolyn Davidson, and Pam Lyle. Tunis Deal, Linda Harrison, and Debbie Morrow were recognized as Apprentice Trainers of the Year.
Patti Stefek, Adult Development coordinator, recognized Diana Artale as the out-going Stick Your Neck Out recipient with a special pin, who passed the special giraffe award to the 2004 recipient Linda Loop. Linda wrote five outlines this last year and has been very instrumental in collaborations between the Program and Adult Development departments in offering girl and adult trainings.
Two staff members, Tracy Gillin for her contribution to recruitment trainings and Judy Syring for her unique training assistance – holding a computer on her head for trainees to see the screen, were honored.
Two new awards were presented this year – The Turtle Award went to Suzie Gann, Mary Ridings and Sarah Rushing for their quick action and thinking when fellow trainer Sandy Cutler suffered a stroke at a Standard Troop Camp training. Carole Lowenkron was presented with the Guardian Angel Award for her continued support to the department.

Become a Council Trainer!

  • Are you seeking an opportunity to expand your Girl Scout experience?
  • Can you spend a few hours per month doing something you enjoy?
  • Are you interested in assisting new and experienced volunteers?
  • Are you interested in sharing your experiences with other adults?
  • Are you conscientious about policies and guidelines?
  • Do you want to be a part of a winning team?

If you answered yes to at least half of the above questions, the Council wants you to become a trainer. GSSJC is seeking knowledgeable and interested adults who are willing to train volunteers in leadership, outdoor skills, enrichment, administration, and more. The training and development provided for trainers is thorough and will prepare you for any subject you are interested in. So, consider answering “yes” to the last question: Do you want to be a GSSJC trainer?
