First Aid and CPR

Information on First Aid/CPR/AED Courses

     First aid and CPR trained girls and adults are always needed at events. All first aid courses are valid for three years from date of completion. CPR courses are valid for one year from date of completion.
     All first aid courses have the same skills and basic general information but use different books, scenarios, videos, and have different emphasis. All Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED courses train individuals to act in emergency situations and to recognize and care for life threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies. Also included are rescue breathing, choking and CPR skills. Early recognition of a heart attack and information on accident prevention is also presented. General standard first aid information and skills i.e. bandaging and splinting are covered. Preventing disease transmission and responsibilities of a First Aider are also included.

The different fist aid courses are:
The Sports Safety Training (SST) was developed with the US Olympic Committee and combines lectures and demos to teach sports and group activity related first aid and injury prevention skills. It is a Level II First Aid class for Girl Scout purposes. The scenarios are based on outdoor activities and sports.
The Community First Aid and Safety (CFAS) course offers first aid and safety information related to the home environment. It is a Level I First Aid class. When combined with When Help is Delayed, it becomes a Level II class.
The Wilderness First Aide course teaches first aid skills and knowledge for settings in which emergency care is delayed for long periods, or self-evacuation is necessary. It is an in-depth Level II First Aid course. CPR skills are not included.
When Help is Delayed is for those away from medical help for longer than 30 minutes and when taken is another Level II First Aid course for Girl Scout purposes.
CPR courses also vary:
Community CPR deals with: an infant from 0 to 1 year; a child 1 to age 8, an adult those over age 8.
Adult CPR those over age 8.
Child CPR children 1-8 years of age
The AED is the module that deals with the Automated External Defibrillators or “paddles” as they are commonly referred to, which are used to help restart a heart.
CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer is the course for those individuals who have a duty to respond to emergencies, i.e. lifeguards, EMT’s, paramedics, RN’s, etc., and includes infant, child, adult and AED skills.
