Basic Water Rescue
     This Red Cross course provides individuals with the information and skills necessary to prevent, recognize and respond to water emergencies using non-swimming rescues. Proper techniques to care for possible head, neck or back injuries will be covered. This course will also prepare you for water emergencies by teaching you how to protect yourself while assisting others. This course will NOT provide you with all the information and skills needed to be a certified lifeguard. It is a great class for those desiring to become certified pool watchers. It is the course recommended by Safety-Wise. It is also the course for those wishing to become Motorboat Operators for the sailing program.
Who: Girls ages 11 and up and adults
When: July 31, Sunday 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

Cost: $15 includes lunch
Note: No swimming skills needed but you will need to be comfortable in shallow water so you can do practical skills. It is suggested you purchase and read previously the ARC Basic Water Rescue book at any Red Cross Service Center. A few “loaner” books will be available at camp.

Water Rat Rescue
Do you want to be a lifeguard? How about learning the skills necessary for entry to the ARC Lifeguard Training course, communication and decision-making skills, and the basic responsibilities of a lifeguard? Swimming skills, self rescue and rescue of others as well as first aid and CPR information is included. A Basic Water Rescue, First Aid and CPR certificate(s) will be issued at the completion of the course. Portions of the Girl Scout Water Sports Interest Project patch may be earned by taking this course. Note: This program does not give participants the information and skills necessary to be certified as a lifeguard nor will it give them an ARC Learn to Swim certificate.

Who: Girls ages 11 and up and adults
Prerequisites: · Swim front crawl 25 yards continuously while breathing to the side
· Tread water for one minute using arms and legs · Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet underwater
When: July 29-July 31, 7 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Sunday
Min./Max.: 6/16
Cost: $50 includes all books, materials, and meals

Lifeguard Training
Trained Red Cross lifeguards are always needed at events and on weekends. Girls could even earn money guarding at Girl Scouting activities, area public and private pools, and waterfronts. Lifeguards at camp are always needed throughout the year. This is the course for the adults to take in order for them to take their girls swimming at pools or at lakes, beaches, or the bay. Lifeguards are also needed at other events such as canoeing, sailing, wading, tubing, etc. This will fulfill the requirements for Level 1, 2, or 3 Lifeguard.
This class focuses on the job of the lifeguard in a swimming pool environment. The Waterfront Lifeguarding module will be included if time and weather permits. The purpose of the course is to provide lifeguard candidates and lifeguards with the skills and knowledge necessary to keep the patrons of aquatic facilities safe in and around the water. The course will teach victim recognition, surveillance, equipment based rescues, spinal injury management, and includes first aid skills as well as rescue breathing, choking, CPR for infant/child, adult as well as two person CPR, alternate airway management and the use of a pocket mask. The modules on how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) and PDT (preventing disease transmission) are included.

Who: Girls ages 15 and up and adults
Prerequisites:  

· Swim 500 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order: 200 yards front crawl stroke with rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick; and 100 yards breast stroke and 200 yards using either the front crawl stroke using rhythmic breathing or breaststroke. These 200 yards may be a mixture of front crawl and breaststroke
· Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breast stroke, surface dive to depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 lb object, return to surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object. When returning to the starting point, the candidate must hold the 10 lb object with both hands and keep his/her face above the water.

When: July 29-July 31, and August 5-7, 7 p.m. Friday through 5 p.m. Sunday
Attendance both weekends is mandatory.

Lifeguard Training Review
This class focuses on the job of the lifeguard in a swimming pool environment. It will review victim recognition, surveillance, equipment-based rescue, spinal injury management, and include First Aid, rescue breathing, choking, CPR for infant/child, and adult and two person CPR, and alternate airway management. PDT (Preventing Disease Transmission) and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) modules are included. It will update your current unexpired Lifeguard Training and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificates. You MUST have an unexpired Lifeguard Training certificate in order to participate in this course.

Who: Girls ages 15 and up and adults
When: August 5-7, 7 p.m. Friday through 5 p.m. Sunday
Bring: Copies of unexpired certifications.

Cost: $70, does not include text, but meals are included
Note: Plan to purchase and read prior to the class Arc Lifeguard Training (2001)
Prerequisites:  

· Current unexpired within three years Lifeguard Training Certificate
· Age 15 years or older prior to completion of course
· The same prerequisites as listed in Lifeguard Training.
