All ratings are offered once in the spring and once in the fall starting in August. For those Mariners who have taken the theory segment of the following ratings, optional activities will be provided. If you are unsure of what to take next, check the ratings chart on the Mariner Web site (http://gssjc.org/mariners/sail.htm).

Sunfish Mate and Sailing FUNdamentals Ratings
This class will begin training for Mariners or for those who have satisfactorily completed ARC Basic Sailing or GSSJC Seaman Rating or ARC Small Craft Safety-Sailing who wish to become more proficient on sailboats such as the Sunfish. These two ratings are the prerequisites for many other ratings. The Sailing FUNdamentals Rating will reinforce the sailing theory learned in Basic Sailing adding a variety of other topics of interest to the sailor wanting to expand their sailing knowledge and abilities. The Sunfish Mate Rating will let the Mariner work on perfecting their skills while sailing solo on a Sunfish as well as learning how to do simple maintenance.

Sunfish Skipper and Performance Sailing
This class will enhance training for those Mariners who have completed previous ratings and service hours and wish to become a skipper on the Sunfish. These two ratings are the prerequisites for many other ratings. The Performance Sailing rating will further enhance the principles of sailing and its components. You will learn more about navigation and weather. Charting a course will be one challenge. While earning Sunfish Skipper you will expand on your skills while developing good helmsmanship and learning how to sail well. Learning to sail a Marconi rigged boat or small sloop with just the main sail will give the Sunfish Skipper a new experience.
