March 2005 Volume 31 Issue 3

FOC (Fundamentals of Canoeing)
The Red Cross Fundamentals of Canoeing course covers the basics for canoeing, including introduction to the sport, equipment, boating safety basic techniques, strokes and rescues. This course teaches students to be safe on and around the water while learning to canoe in a flat water environment. It teaches self-rescue skills and rescue of others. This is the first step for girls to take, if they would like to participate in canoe trips. Prerequisite: Girls must have a Red Cross Level III swim card or equivalent and GSSJC Safe Boating Test. Adults must be comfortable in deep water and pass the Safe Boating Test.
