Holocaust Museum Houston’s Butterfly Project

Colleen LaBorde, Associate Director of Educational Outreach for the Holocaust Museum Houston cordially invites Girl Scouts to participate in the HMH Butterfly Project to collect 1.5 million child made butterflies in memory of the 1.5 million children that perished in the Holocaust. So far the museum has collected 70,000. Visit the museum’s Web site to learn more, www.hmh.org/minisite/butterfly/index.html.
Girls learned about butterflies through this year’s Fall Product Sale. Incorporate the study of these lovely portraits of nature with the service project to the Holocaust Museum Houston (HMH) as a troop meeting or in an event. The only guideline concerning the butterflies is that they cannot be made out of food or have food on them.
HMH shared ideas for troop activities at various program levels. At the end of each session have girls:
* make butterflies
*talk about how each butterfly is different and very special, just like people.
* donate the butterflies to the HMH to help people learn about respecting others.

The museum believes children fifth grade and older can be taught about the Holocaust. Younger ages can focus on prejudice and standing up for what is right. Deliver butterflies to the Holocaust Museum, 5401 Caroline Street, 77004.

Brownie Girl Scouts:
* Read the book The Sneetches
by Dr. Suess.
*Talk about the lesson learned by the Sneetches.
Junior Girl Scouts:

* Read the poem No Difference.

Girls 11-17:
*Arrange for a troop field trip to the Holocaust Museum Houston, 5401 Caroline Street, Houston, 77004, 713-942-8000 or visit www.hmh.org
*Docent led tours available Saturday and Sunday on the 1/2 hour from 12:30- 3:30 p.m.
* If you are unable to visit the museum, there are many books/videos available on the Holocaust that girls could view before the project.

No Difference by Shel Silverstein
Small as a peanut,
Big as a giant,
We’re all the same size
When we turn off the light.

Rich as a sultan,
Poor as a mite,
We’re all worth the same
When we turn off the light.

Red, black or orange,
Yellow or white,
We all look the same
When we turn off the light.

So maybe the way
To make everything right
Is for God to just reach out
And turn off the light!

*If necessary, the word “us” may be substituted for “God.”

* Have the girls draw illustrations for the poem or design a charade/skit to be acted out when a narrator reads the poem.

* Discuss what the author wants us to learn from the poem.
