Troops give back to their communities

Troop #4696 a.k.a. CocoPuffs is a very active troop who enjoys community work and participating in service unit projects. They have set a goal to make baby bibs this year and donate them to a charitable organization by December 2005. Their leader, Sherri Warren, is very proud of this group as they truly work together like sisters should.

Junior Troop #12493, Cadette Troop #12309 and Brownie Troop #16093 of Bluebonnet Meadows Service Unit kept the tradition alive by Christmas caroling at the Park Place Assisted Living Center. The girls brought handmade ornaments and cookies to the residents. It was a great joy when the ladies and gentlemen joined in the singing.

The girls in Troop #25098 took time recently during their meeting to write 25 letters to the soldiers serving in Iraq. The aunt of one of the soldiers who received the letters wrote, “Stanley is serving in Iraq and has been there for a month. We have spoken to him several times and he is very homesick and misses his family and friends. The kindness of the girls and their leaders has touched my family and we are grateful to them for helping keep up the spirits of him and his fellow squadmates. My heartfelt thanks to the girls and leaders of Troop #25098.”

Troop #1398, a third year Brownie troop from Deer Park, celebrated the success of one of their recent service projects with KPRC Channel 2’s Radar during the station’s annual Pet-a-Thon. The girls put out door hangers in their neighborhoods, and asked for donations from their school and local merchants. Their efforts produced more than 1,000 pounds of food, and many of other much needed supplies for the Houston Humane Society. This busy troop was not only successful in this effort but simultaneously supported a Senior Girl Scout working on her Gold Award by collecting all the things a 6- year-old girl would need for her own bedroom for a local Habitat for Humanity project. These dedicated Girl Scouts also maintain a flower bed at the church where they meet and just planted fresh spring flowers to celebrate Easter along with performing several flag ceremonies in their community.

Junior Girl Scouts from Troops #1748 and #1713 volunteered their time at the League City Animal Shelter by working with the dogs and cats, and collecting more than 600 pounds of food and supplies for the shelter. For the principal portion of the project, the girls helped to install a beautifully landscaped garden area and pond to be enjoyed by the patrons and staff of the shelter. The troop collected donations from other Stars Service Unit Girl Scout troop leaders and from members of the community. Donations included handmade cat beds, food and toys, as well as funds to pay for the landscaping materials. One creative way to raise funds for the project entailed a “puppy kisses booth” at local elementary school fairs where Ms. Melching, troop leader of Troop #1748 sold 50 cent smooches from her four month old Pug, Coconut.
