Girl Scouts go to the Texas Legislature
From March 20-24, girls saw first-hand the excitement of Texas politics in action. Girl Scouts from all over Texas met in Austin to experience life as a Legislative Page. Girl Scouts quickly delivered messages and documents to legislators while they were in sessions or committee meetings. San Jacinto Council was represented by Jane, Katelan, Kathryn, Jennifer, and Erica who spent hours making sure that all representatives and senators within GSSJC’s 21-county area learned more about Girl Scouts. Along with important facts about Girl Scouts, each legislative office received a box of Girl Scout cookies. A special recognition of Girl Scouts was made on the floor of the House and Senate.

Senior Recognition Event

The 2005 Senior Recognition Event (SRE) was attended by more than 250 guests and 104 Senior Girl Scouts who were recognized as 10-year pin recipients, graduating seniors, and/or Gold Award recipients. The SRE Girl Planning Board had a fun time planning this year’s theme “Reflecting on the Past, Celebrating the Future” with bright floral invitations, balloons, plants, and decorations. The festive yet poignant mood was well captured by a beautiful slide show in tribute to all honorees, designed by SRE Girl Planning Board member Kalin Gernand. In addition, 24 Emerald Circle Scholarships and four Bud and Nancy Simpson Future Leader Scholarships were announced. Special thanks to The Emerald Circle who helps fund the annual program and to the SRE Girl Planning Board members and adult advisors: Meagan, Emily, Lamaria, Kalin, Cujean, Joy, Jeannae, Sade, Kim Colarusso (Event Chair), Lisa Morrell, Gloria LaPoint, Cindy and David Gernand, Pam Staples, and Cathy Wining Thomas. Fabulous job Girl Scouts! For a complete list of scholarship recipients, see page 81.
