Taste of Canoeing

This is a fun course designed to introduce girls to the sport of canoeing. This course will include learning about the parts of a canoe and paddle, how to get in and out of a canoe, how to tie knots, and general canoeing safety and rescue skills.

Who: Girls ages 10 and up (no adults)
When: July 30, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
or July 31, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Min./Max.: 6/16
Cost: $12.50 includes lunch

Red Cross Canoeing Certifications
for Flat or Non-moving Water

For girls ages 12 and up and adults (no males under age 18) there are two options to obtain their beginning canoeing rating.
1. For those who do not know how to canoe take the FUNdamentals of Canoeing course.
2. For those who do know how to canoe, take the Small Craft Safety-Canoeing course.


FUNdamentals of Canoeing
The Red Cross FUNdamentals of Canoeing course covers FUNdamentals of Canoeing, including introduction to the sport, equipment, boating safety basic techniques, strokes and rescues. This course teaches students to be safe on and around the water while learning to canoe in a flat-water environment. It teaches self-rescue skills and rescue of others. Must have a Swim Level III card and GSSJC Safe Boating Test Card.

Who: Girls age 12 and up and adults
Where: Camp Casa Mare and Armand Bayou off Bay Area Blvd
When: August 5-7, 7 p.m. Friday through 5 p.m. Sunday
Min./Max.: 8/24
Cost: $45 includes all meals but does not include book

FUNdamentals of Canoeing Review
If you have taken the Red Cross FUNdamentals of Canoeing course and desire to enhance your skills, this is for you. Come play on the bayou while working to improve your paddling skills in a solo canoe! Review of the techniques, strokes, rescues and knots will be included. This course reinforces the skills you learned in FOC and prepares you for possible participation in a moving water course or perhaps an instructor course. Must have a Swim Level III swim card and GSSJC Safe Boating Test Card.

Who: Girls age 12 and up and adults (no males under age of 18)
Where: Casa Mare and Armand Bayou in Clear Lake
When: July 29-July 31, 7 p.m. Friday through 5 p.m. Sunday
Min/Max: 6/10
Cost: $45 includes all meals but does not include book
