June/July 2005 Volume 31 Issue 6
Megan and Carrie held a summer enrichment reading program to help children to become better readers. They read books, played games, and made crafts throughout the five-day camp. They also worked on a play each day that they preformed on the last day. Elisa traveled to Piedras Negras, Mexico with teen volunteers for a day of arts and crafts with 40 young orphans. She has also organized future community service trips through St. Edith Stein Catholic Church.
Leela directed a play using the actors in her drama department at school. It was performed for the children in several local YMCA after school programs to introduce them to drama. It was also performed at Cy-Fair High School. Her friend wrote the play with the main lesson being “make new friends, but keep the old.” Jacalyn collected items for the Jamaican National Children’s Home in Jamaica. She also taught others about Jamaica, its culture, people, and about the children’s home. She talked to adults, children, community groups, and Girl Scout troops about Jamaica and her project and collected 44 boxes of items to send to the home.
