Girl Scouts earn special recognition for service

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards celebrations honoring young Texas students were held in April as part of the nation’s largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteerism. Epitomizing the American spirit of public service, each student has an inspiring history of community involvement.
The youth honored at the Prudential Spirit of Community celebration were acknowledged for the time they have spent in service to their communities. They also received special gifts commemorating the occasion. Also in attendance were Prudential Financial representatives and other special guests. The guests had an opportunity to show their support for these students who have initiated and organized meaningful service projects to benefit their home communities.
Two girls from San Jacinto Council were honored:

Nicole, Hidden Dell Academy, Houston, who made more than 2,000 child ID kits for distribution to the community, and established an annual walk benefiting the Laura Recovery Center.

Delayna, Nederland High School, Nederland, is a program aide for the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council. She has developed her own program plans and materials. She also assists with programs planned by adult staff, volunteers and other program aides. Throughout the year, she has worked with kindergarten girls through adults.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), was created in 1995 to help make young Americans aware of the importance of volunteerism and community service.

HISD honors two of GSSJC's own

Recently, the Houston Independent School District awarded Phyllis Nervous and Donna Robinson with the Outstanding Community Partnership Award in the West District. The award honored their exemplary volunteer service at Revere Middle School during the 2004-2005 school year.
Phyllis is a part time employee at GSSJC. She started conducting the Girl Scouting in the School Day (GSISD) programs at Revere nine years ago when her daughter was a student there. Through the years she has gone beyond the call of duty by doing recruitment booths and rallies for the school to promote Girl Scouting and participated in various other functions on behalf of Girl Scouts at the school. She served on Revere’s Shared Decision Making Council this past year and gave them some creative ideas to implement to help students discipline themselves. In addition to her work with Girl Scouts, she is a veteran flight attendant for Continental Airlines and in her spare time she has taught Tai Bo and fitness to church groups.
Donna has developed GSISD/In-School Scouting programs since 1991 and has been with GSSJC since 1986. She worked as a membership manager for 10 years and also as a marketing manager for three years before becoming the Community Outreach manager. Her background is in social work and she previously worked as a social worker for Spring Branch ISD.

Donna lent her support to Revere by devising curriculum to meet their specific student’s needs and next year will be helping them with curriculum for their after school program. She has also participated in booths and luncheons on behalf of Girl Scouting at the school’s request.
     Congratulations to Phyllis and Donna!
