Overnights at the Houston Museum of Natural Science

General Information

Where: Houston Museum of Natural Science, One Hermann Circle Drive, Houston. The Museum is located near Hermann Park across from the Miller Outdoor Theater. For detailed directions to the museum, click on Museum Info at www.hmns.org. Complimentary parking for overnight participants in the Museum’s parking garage.

Bring: GSSJC form F-204, two copies of GSSJC form F-185 (Publicity release allows Museum to use photos taken during event), Signed HMNS release and consent forms for each overnight participant, troop first aid kit, personal toiletries, overnight gear (sleeping bag and pillow),
Note: A complete list of Overnight “Do’s and Dont’s,” Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) and the HMNS release and consent form will accompany the registration information packet each group leader will receive prior to the overnight date.
Cost: $40 per camper (girl), $20 per required adult chaperones
Absolutely no tagalongs. Event fee includes: program activities, evening snack, breakfast, Planetarium show and admission to the permanent exhibit halls on Saturday. HMNS Overnight Patches are included for all girls. Additional patches are available for $3 each. List the number of additional patches you’d like to purchase on the Program Registration Form. DO NOT PAY FOR THESE PATCHES UNTIL THE EVENT.
Register: Use Program Registration Form. Each group must submit a full listing of camper and chaperone names with their registration form for use by the museum staff so no girl will be overlooked.

Details: Due to limited space, group/troops must register a MINIMUM of five girls.
Chaperones: First five campers have two adult chaperones (at least one female) to meet the GSUSA Safety-wise requirement and the HMNS requirements. If group has 5-16 girls: two chaperones only (at least one female). Groups over 16, one adult chaperone required for each eight girls. (At least one female) Small troop? Consider combining with another small troop to meet the registration requirements!

Brownie Science Sampler Overnight

How can you blow up a balloon with a soda bottle? Can you find a substance that is not quite a solid or a liquid? How can you move metal without even touching it? Get these answers and more at the FIRST EVER Brownie Science Sampler Overnight at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Participate in hands on activities and experiments, see the night sky at the Burke Baker Planetarium and settle down to sleep among the exhibits. Campers will work toward earning the Science in Action Try-it.

When: Friday, January 14, beginning at 7 p.m. - Saturday, January 15, ending at 9 a.m.

Dazzling Discoveries Overnight

Journey into the world of glittering gems and gilded treasures! Tour the Gems and Minerals hall and be inspired to create fantastic jewelry of your own. After a fun filled evening of activities see the night sky in the Burke Baker Planetarium to explore the night sky before settling down to sleep among the exhibits. All overnighters will have a special opportunity to tour the Gold! Exhibition before the public arrives on Saturday morning. Campers will work toward earning the Jeweler Badge while participating in activities.

When: Friday, March 11, 7 p.m.-Saturday, March 12, 9 a.m.

Discover your World Overnight

From chemical reactions to geology and optical illusions to starfields campers can discover science all around at the HMNS Discover your World Overnight. During a fun filled evening of activities join Dr. Carolyn Sumners in the Burke Baker Planetarium to explore the night sky before settling down to sleep among the exhibits. Campers will work toward earning the Science Discovery Badge while participating in activities.

When: Friday, April 8, 7 p.m.-Saturday, April 9, 9 a.m.
Deadline: Friday, March 25, close of business day. No refunds. No waiting list.
