Congratulations Gold Award recipients

These Senior Girl Scouts recently completed their Gold Award projects and by doing so, earned the Gold Award.

LaToya A. taught a health and hygiene class to a group of 12-year-old girls. She taught the girls the importance of skin care, exercise, and a balanced diet. At the end of the series of classes she threw them a healthy food party.

Lauren H.collected new socks and underwear for the children living at the Star of Hope Women and Family Emergency Shelter. “From working on this project, I was made aware of the operations of a shelter, and how each and every donation is needed to provide assistance to the homeless on a regular basis.”

Jessica K. had art students create an art piece using the theme “What America or veterans stand for.” Along with a piece she made, Kong created a piece of art that was donated to the VA Medical Center. “The purpose of this project was to give veterans a sense of hope that future generations still care about others and their country.”

Sarah O.coordinated the making of 30 scarves for orphans in Bulgaria. She had Girl Scout troops and community members help make the scarves. She also had Brownie Girl Scouts make cards to send with the scarves.

Michelle B.collected and then donated more than 1,000 stuffed animals to Pasadena Pct. 2 Constable Gary Freeman for handing out to children in crisis situations. She also made, with the help of family and friends, 100 stuffed pigs and ducks.

Rhema H.taught teenagers American Sign Language. She taught them vocabulary, the manual alphabet, 100 number counting, greetings, phrasing, and colors. Hill taught using repetition, mirror lessons, games, crafts, and extended practice.

Krystal L. created a health booth at Hutzell Elementary School carnival and at a D.A.R.E. day camp at Mayde Creek High School. She had the participants decorate two magnets with sayings about staying away from drugs. They kept one, and Lewis donated the others to Palmer Drug Abuse Program.

Stacey S. provided 14 toy boxes filled with toys to the nursing staff at the Harris County Health, Public Health, and Environmental Services. She surveyed the nurses to see what kind of toys to get, built three of the toy boxes and bought the rest with her own money, and talked to various groups to get toy donations.

Erica E. created care boxes for a battered women’s shelter. She collected enough toiletry items to donate 100 care boxes. “From working on this project I learned a lot about the community and felt better for helping others,” said Eliason.

Sarah J. held a four-week tutorial program for students struggling with third grade TAKS math. “From working on this project, I learned organizational skills and learned it takes a lot of patience to work with younger children.”

Mandy M. created a pamphlet for parents on ways to strengthen their reading time with their children. She also planned and directed a reading program for children living at a women’s shelter. She recruited volunteers to read to the children for an hour, two nights a week. Morton also held a book drive in her community.

Sandra W.recruited volunteers to help get family members to visit the residents of a nursing home. She also led Troop #11164 in making decorations for an end of the summer luncheon. The residents and their family members were brought together for and afternoon of barbecue and bingo games. The girls from the troop presented each of the residents with a homemade frame.
