Press Corps wants you!

Each service unit should have one person designated as the Press Corps member. The service unit manger appoints the Press Corps member. Members of the Press Corps communicate the benefits of Girl Scouting and inform the public about what is going on in the Council through the outlying and suburban newspapers.

You are not alone
When you become a member, a Press Corps packet will be mailed to you with all the information you need to learn how to do your new job. Press Corps representatives will also receive mailings several times a year from the Communications Department regarding publicity efforts. Often these will contain useful information for you to use on the local level such as girls going on STUDIO 2B destinations or earning or working on the Gold Award. The mailing may also indicate when an event will be covered by the Communications Department so there is no duplication of efforts.
We know how busy you are so we try to make this job as easy as possible. You will also receive sample releases about Girl Scout events. All you will have to do is retype the release filling in the blanks with local information.

Does this sound like fun?
To sign up to be a Press Corps member, contact your service unit manager. Make sure they contact the Communications Department at 713-292-0236 to let us know your contact information.

There’s even a patch!
Place three news items in your local
newspaper and receive the Press Corps patch!

Why I volunteered

I volunteered to do Press Corps for our service unit because I saw how hard some troops or individuals within Girl Scouting worked to serve the community, and I wanted them to get some sort of recognition from the community. When I wanted my daughter to join Girl Scouts, I had no clue how to do it because there was no local information. After research and persistence, the Cleveland area, which had no active troops, now has 10 or more troops.

I love the recognition the girls get and the recognition of the whole concept of Girl Scouting. If the community is made aware of the service the girls provide, they are more likely to support them more during product sales time or service projects. It can be frustrating when I have a hard time getting stuff in the paper but it pays off when it finally makes it and the girls see themselves in the paper. To them, it’s a part of “fame.”
