Congratulations Gold Award recipients

These Senior Girl Scouts recently completed their Gold Award projects and by doing so, earned the Gold Award.

Catherine A.helped with the Branch Crossing Junior High production of the play Backyard Bugs. She directed the design and construction of the costumes. Arceneaux also organized a sewing kit to be used for future productions, taught the students the basic skills of costuming, and the use of sewing machines.

Susan K. created a tutorial Web site for Spanish students that covers Spanish I-III. It includes tutorials in verb tenses, vocabulary, and grammar help. The site also includes interactive quizzes and videos. “From working on this project I learned HTML, JavaScript, Flash, Web design, and more Spanish than I ever learned in class.”

Rachel S. created a video to educate the community on the projects and goals of Montgomery County United Way. She went to events to videotape and interview United Way employees, then edited the video and showed it at service unit meetings in Mongomery County.

Andrea Y. recorded children’s books onto audiocassettes for Interfaith Hospitality Network. Members of the community and Yee also sewed several stuffed animal characters to coincide with each story. “From working on this project, I learned that people in the community are very willing to help such a worthy cause.”

Melanie B. collected books for Casa de Juan Diego, a shelter for women and children. She then established a story hour at the center complete with interactive learning activities. “I chose this project because I love to read and I realized that families with low income do not have the time to read with their children.”

May-Ying L. held three Chinese harp concerts. She designed her own music, drew and printed bilingual flyers and programs, and set the performance stage. Lam had her friends be her master of ceremonies. She researched the background of her music for the MCs to brief the audience and let them get a taste of the Chinese culture.

Erica T.repainted the kitchen and senior high room at her church. She brightened up the kitchen with yellow paint and a darker yellow for the cabinets. In the senior high room, she painted the books of the Bible on two walls and painted one wall with chalkboard paint.

Karen B. and Rachel N. worked together for their Gold Award Projects. They planned a Halloween carnival for 200 children in their neighborhood. Admission to the festival was a donation of canned goods that they donated to Northeast Area Ministries. The children enjoyed the games, drinks, snacks, and the seasonal trinkets they earned at the booths.

Celia H.collected 25 boxes of school materials and supplies for a bilingual school in Honduras. During the summer she took the materials she collected so the students and teachers would have what they needed when the school opened.

Tommi Jo S. held six collection events for Angel’s Attic. She collected more than 3,000 items for Angel’s Attic including toilet paper, paper towels and tissues, items that cannot be bought with food stamps. “From working on this project, I learned that motivation was a big part of getting things done.”

Ashley W. worked with Carrie Schul and planned two songfests for the La Porte Service Unit. They went to troop meetings to help teach lyrics and choreography to the girls. As a service project the girls who participated brought toys and canned food to the events.

Virginia B. and Katheine B. worked together for their Gold Award Projects. Their project, “Summer in Bloom,” took place at the Ronald McDonald House. They helped the residents make summertime crafts to place on a seven-foot tree that was placed in the lobby. More than 600 ornaments were displayed on the tree and more were shared with family members, staff, and friends at the house.
