Houston Audobon Society

Houston Audubon Society (HAS) is “spreading its wings” a little closer into Houston.
Sims Bayou Urban Nature Center (SBUNC) will become the Nature Education Center for Houston Audubon Society. They are excited to obtain this facility to better reach more children and adults with their fun, hands on Nature Education programs.
The SBUNC has a peaceful, country-like setting only minutes from downtown Houston. Situated in historic Park Place on the original channel of Sims Bayou, the Nature Center’s log cabin, barn, 100-year old wagon and gazebo give the property a rustic, homey look. The vegetable and butterfly gardens, bird blind, ponds, and wetland trails offer great opportunities to explore and experience nature in an urban landscape.
Mary Anne Weber, the Education Director for Houston Audubon Society and well known to many as the “Bird Lady” and Deb Taylor, Nature Educator, will be facilitators at HAS - SBUNC. Deb started the EarthPACT program during ’04-’05 at the Houston Audubon Society’s Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary with great success and will be moving that program over to the HAS-SBUNC. This will allow the Houston Audubon Society to offer more Wildlife Badge and Animal Try-it Workshops taught by the capable Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts of EarthPACT. Most months next school year will offer two workshops, with exception of those months that are heavy birding or outreach seasons for Houston Audubon.
