Make A Difference Day

Make A Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others – a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Everyone can participate. Millions have! Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, www.usaweekend.com/diffday/. Make A Difference Day takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council is going to Paint – Build – Create. Girls will paint learning boards for WWW United, Inc.; build toys for the Gifts with Heart project, and create a garland for the Girl Scout Holiday tree at the Houston Museum of Natural Science just to name a few of the service projects they will accomplish as they make memories at this day at camp.

Who: Brownie, Junior, Cadette, and Seniors (girls ages 11-17)
Safety-wise ratio of adult leaders and volunteers (will be helping girls with projects)
Where: Camp Misty Meadows Lodge, Conroe
When: Saturday, October 22; 9:30 a.m. check in; event 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.
Bring: Completed permission slip (F-204) and medical form (F-185) for each girl participant; Completed adult emergency form (F-22) for each adult participant; first aid kit; SWAPS; snack, drinks, lunch; garbage bag for litter; service project donation (information in confirmation letter)
Min/Max: 100/500
Cost: $8/girl; $4/adult, includes Make a Difference Day patch for each participant, girl or adult, camp fee, and event supplies.

Bear, Blankets and Backpacks

2005 Service Project at Six Flags AstroWorld

     Join the annual service project always part of Girl Scout Day at Six Flags AstroWorld on Saturday, October 1. The fall 2005 event will host community organizations that will benefit from your wise shopping and collecting of bears, blankets, and backpacks.

     Girls may use this service project collection drive towards the community requirement for GSSJC Council Service Project Patch (F-834). Watch for information on CIN to learn more about where your donation is going and how these organizations serve your community. Collection times for the bears, blankets, and backpacks will be from gate opening to 1 p.m. If you plan to arrive later or if you are unable to attend, please feel free to drop your donations by the Girl Scout Office during the month of September (not this summer please).

Junior Badge in a Box

     The Program Department is now offering resource boxes to girls/troops wanting to complete certain badges. The following GSUSA Badge in a Boxes are available:

* Architecture * Girl Scouting in the USA * Theater * Jeweler * Science Sleuth * Drawing and Painting * Girl Scouting Around the World * Visual Arts

     Each box lists complete directions for fulfilling each requirement as stated in the Junior Girl Scout Handbook. They contain books, charts, examples, and lesson plans to help your girls successfully earn the badge.
     The boxes are located at the Houston Girl Scout Center at 3110 Southwest Freeway. You may come and pick them up and keep them for up to four weeks. Please remember that other girls may be waiting for the box. The rental fee is $5 per box and there is a $25 deposit. Your deposit will be fully refunded upon complete return of the box.
