Successful programs abound at GSSJC

Girl Scouts ACT OUT at
Episcopal High School

by Kent Johnson, Chairman of Theatre/Dance/Tech/Speech

“The faces of the girls...their faces that we will remember the most,” exclaimed one of the student actor/teachers who participated in the Theatre Badge Workshop sponsored by Episcopal High School’s resident acting troupe, MASQUE on February 5. Of course it was easy to remember their faces as all of the girls had spent one of four workshops working on make-up/face-painting as part of the requirements for the Theatre Arts Badge. MASQUE, directed by Theatre teacher, Kent Johnson, is a year-long advanced acting class at EHS; students study a variety of performance styles from improvisation to Shakespeare, from the creation of an original one-act play to performances pieces designed specifically for chapel presentations. Hosting the Theatre Arts Workshop is always a fun experience for these young actors as they share what they have learned about theatre with the young girls. MASQUE begins each workshop with an improvisation performance. The Girl Scouts are then broken up into four groups with MASQUE members teaching each section, under the guidance of Mr. Johnson and his college theatre teacher George Brock. Each group spends 30-40 minutes studying Improvisation, Theatre Games, Make-up, and Mask-making. At the end of the program, each troop receives the Theatre Arts Badge. It’s great fun. It’s a great community outreach program. MASQUE students learn that they can TEACH, and the girls seem to love every minute of each activity. MASQUE plans to host one, possibly two workshops next year. Watch The Golden Link for more information.

Career and Tech Fair 2005 and Careers Up Close events were both successes!

The Girl Planning Board breathed a sigh of relief as the last of the girls headed to their cars after an exciting day at the University of Houston campus. GSSJC Career and Tech Fair Council Coordinator Volunteer Donna Carvalho created a great event along with the Girl Planning Board. Many thanks to Katy, Kendra, Marisa, Kelly, Breanne, Carrie, Celeste, Erin, Kristin, Megan, and Anu. They attended meetings, contacted career professionals, created the skits, served as fashion models, and were great hostesses the day of the event.

Troop enjoys Council Storytelling Kits

Over the past two years Junior Troop #1104 has enjoyed all four of the Storytelling Kits the Council has to offer. They started the girls in Brownies with “Wolves of Yellowstone” and “Chessie the Travelin Man” and finished up this year with “Bentley and Blueberry” and “Jasmine the Cat.” The girls loved the stories and learned a lot about each of these animals. The troop used the Story Kits on campouts at night as a wind down activity after the campfire. The girls enjoyed each having their own book to look at and passing the stuffed animal around while the story was read to them. Many girls said they had never heard of a manatee and were surprised to hear of the wolves in Yellowstone. The dog and cat books were the girls’ favorite because they could relate so well to these animals. They learned a lot about caring for animals and our duties as humans to care for them. These are great kits and Troop #1104 suggests everyone give them a try. For more information on Storytelling Kits contact Myrna Monconduit at 713-292-0281 or mmoncond@sjgs.org.
