Cadettes plan a day camp theme for their Silver Award

We chose to plan a day camp theme last summer to earn our Silver Award. The theme of the week was “EARTH,” but each day had a separate theme which came from the letters in the word “earth.” The daily themes were Environment, Animals, Recreation, “Think Pink”, and a Hoppy Day at camp. Each of us was responsible for planning activities for each day. Two of us planned crafts, one planned snacks, and one planned games for each day. Samantha and Alexandra, (camp names Thing 1 and Thing 2), were in charge of crafts and planned different crafts to go with the theme of the day. Monday was Environment, so we had the girls make little flower pots with foam flowers and leaf print placemats. For Animals, we made hand puppets with the Brownies and beaded dragonflies with the Juniors. All the girls got to make an etched foil design. On Recreation Day, the girls made little sandal trinket boxes and foam sunshine magnets. They were both a big hit! Thursday was “Think Pink” Day. Everyone made pink poodle purses and pink silly putty! In keeping with the carnival theme on Friday, the girls made tiaras and designed picture frames. Carlee (camp name - Fish), was in charge of snacks. For the environment theme, we made worms and dirt! For Animal Day, we ate ants on a stick. The girls used either a pretzel stick or celery for the stick, then used peanut butter and raisins for the ants. On Wednesday we made trail mix, then took a nature walk. For “Think Pink” Day, we did an activity with red, white, and pink M&Ms and then we had a puppet show. At the carnival, the campers got to decorate their own cupcakes and ate cotton candy. All of the snacks were tasty and made by the campers. Some were very healthy and provided a good snack to keep the girls going! Amber (camp name - Cat in the Hat), was in charge of games. The first day, the girls went on a scavenger hunt. They looked for various things like three different kinds of leaves and two colorful birds. They also learned what trail markers were. Tuesday we played a variety of games ranging from “animal charades” to “sharks and minnows.” We also played musical chairs, but instead of chairs we used dots that we put on the floor and you had to dance like an animal. The girls had lots of fun. On Wednesday and Thursday, the girls were split in half doing archery one day and playing more outdoor games the other day. Carnival Day was the highlight of the week. We played games including musical dots, pinata, pencil in a haystack, fishing, and bean bag toss. All the girls loved how they won prizes by just playing games. Our service project throughout the week was collecting toiletries for children which we donated to Children Protective Services in our community. All through the week, the campers seemed to have lots of fun. We had so much fun during day camp that we can’t wait to go back next year!
