Sloop Crew
Those Mariners who have completed the prerequisite
ratings and service hours may sign up to learn how to crew
on a small camp sloop. This course will teach the Mariners
how to rig, de-rig, and crew a small sloop. They will also
learn how to properly use a jib sail, proper maintenance and
care of the sloops, and the use of the various lines on the
boat. Crew responsibilities will be included.

Sloop Skipper and Performance Sailing
This class will enhance training for those
Mariners who have completed previous ratings and service hours
and wish to become a skipper on our small sloops based at
camp. These two ratings are the prerequisites for many other
ratings. The Performance Sailing rating will further enhance
the principles of sailing and its components. You will learn
more about |
navigation and weather.
Charting a course will be one challenge. While earning Sloop
Skipper, you will expand on your skills while learning your
responsibilities of skippering your ship.

Sloop Captain
This class will enhance training for those
Mariners who have completed previous ratings and service hours
and wish to captain one of our camp based sloops. This rating
is the prerequisite for many other ratings. While earning
Sloop Captain, you will expand on your sailing skills while
learning how to fly the boats Spinnaker.

Big Boat Crew Rating and Sailing FUNdamentals Ratings
This class will begin training for Mariners
or for those who have satisfactorily completed ARC Basic Sailing
or GSSJC Seaman Rating or ARC Small Craft Safety-Sailing who
wish to become more proficient on sailboats such as the big
keeled boats or sloops based at the Marina off camp. These
two ratings are the prerequisites for many other ratings.
The Sailing FUNdamentals Rating will reinforce the sailing
theory learned in Basic Sailing adding a variety of other
topics of interest to the sailor wanting to expand their sailing
knowledge and abilities. The Big Boat Crew Rating will let
the Mariner work on perfecting their skills while crewing
on the “big boats” (keeled sloops) as well as
learning how to do simple maintenance.

First Mate and
Performance Sailing
This class will enhance training for those
Mariners who have completed previous ratings and service hours
that wish to learn to sail the large sloops or fixed keeled
boats. These two ratings are the prerequisites for many other
ratings. The Performance Sailing rating will further enhance
the principles of sailing and its components. You will learn
more about navigation and weather. Charting a course will
be one challenge. While earning the First Mate rating, you
will learn how to maneuver and crew/skipper a large keeled
boat, putting your new navigational information into practical
experience.
