Red
Cross Canoeing Certifications
for Flat or Non-moving Water
For girls ages 12 and up and
adults (no males under age 18) there are two options
to obtain their beginning canoeing rating.
1. For those who do not know how to canoe take the FUNdamentals
of Canoeing course.
2. For those who do know how to canoe, take the Small
Craft Safety-Canoeing course.
FUNdamentals of Canoeing
The Red Cross FUNdamentals of Canoeing
course covers FUNdamentals of Canoeing, including introduction
to the sport, equipment, boating safety basic techniques,
strokes and rescues. This course teaches students to
be safe on and around the water while learning to canoe
in a flat-water environment. It teaches self-rescue
skills and rescue of others. Must have a Swim Level
III card and GSSJC Safe Boating Test Card.

FUNdamentals of Canoeing Review
If you have taken the Red Cross FUNdamentals
of Canoeing course and desire to enhance your skills,
this is for you. Come play on the bayou while working
to improve your paddling skills in a solo canoe! Review
of the techniques, strokes, rescues and knots will be
included. This course reinforces the skills you learned
in FOC and prepares you for possible participation in
a moving water course or perhaps an instructor course.
Must have a Swim Level III swim card and GSSJC Safe
Boating Test Card.
