Sailing Basics - Instruction Weekends

Use this information for all the following events:

Where: Camp Casa Mare Note: NO GSSJC Safe Boating Tests will be given at camp. However, all participants must satisfactorily complete the Red Cross small craft swim test at the beginning of the course. Bring copies of all your certificates with you to camp.

Red Cross Basic Sailing Certifications
For girls in 6th grade and adults (no males under age 18) there are two options to obtain their beginning sailing rating:
1. For those that do not know how to sail take Basic Sailing
2. For those that know how to sail take Small Craft Safety-Sailing

Small Craft Safety-Sailing
      If you KNOW how to sail a Sunfish sailboat on all points of sail by yourself, this course is for you. This Red Cross course was developed in collaboration with the American Camp Association and GSUSA, to meet the needs of camps and other organizations that conduct small craft activities. The American Camp Association will accept the Small Craft Safety Program as meeting accreditation standards for camps in the area of small craft supervision. This course is designed to provide individuals such as camp personnel, trip leaders, and those involved in small craft activities the information and skills necessary to prevent, recognize, and respond to small craft emergencies. This course will also prepare individuals for small craft emergencies by teaching them how to protect themselves while helping others. It is also for those knowing how to sail a way to be checked off on their skills so that they may help with the sailing program. Adults wishing to help with the sailing program will find this course particularly useful. This course does not teach you how to sail. Take the Basic Sailing Course to learn how to sail.

When: May 6-7; 7 p.m. Friday to 5:30 p.m. Saturday

Prerequisites: Girls: Red Cross Level IV swim card or equivalent or better and GSSJC Safe Boating Test Certificate; Adults: GSSJC Safe Boating Test Certification;
All: ARC Basic Sailing practical skills and knowledge and demonstrate basic boat handling skills by sailing solo a set course using all points of sail. (No certifications needed, only skills needed)
Cost: $20; Includes meals but does not include book

Basic Water Rescue
     This Red Cross course provides individuals with the information and skills necessary to prevent, recognize and respond to water emergencies using non-swimming rescues. This course will also prepare you for water emergencies by teaching you how to protect yourself while assisting others. It is highly suggested that all sailing adults take this course. It is a great class for those desiring to become certified pool watchers. It is the course recommended by Safety-Wise. Portions of the Water Sports Interest Project Patch are also covered in this course. This course will NOT provide you with all the information and skills needed to be a certified lifeguard.

When: May 8; Sunday 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
Prerequisites: No swimming skills needed but you will need to be comfortable in shallow water so you can do practical skills.

Cost: $11.50 includes lunch
Text: It is suggested you purchase and read previously the ARC Basic Water Rescue book at any Red Cross Service Center. A few “loaner” books will be available at camp.
Small Craft Safety-Canoeing
     If you know how to canoe and are comfortable handling a solo canoe, this class is for you. This Red Cross course was developed in collaboration with the American Camp Association and GSUSA, to meet the needs of camps and other organizations that conduct small craft activities. The American Camp Association will accept the Small Craft Safety Program as meeting accreditation standards for camps in the area of small craft supervision. This course is designed to provide individuals such as camp personnel, trip leaders, and those involved in small craft activities the information and skills necessary to prevent, recognize, and respond to small craft emergencies. This course will also prepare individuals for small craft emergencies by teaching them how to protect themselves while helping others. It does not teach you how to canoe. (Take FUNdamentals of Canoeing if you do not know how to canoe).

Prerequisites: Girls: Red Cross Learn to Swim Level III swim card or equivalent or better and GSSJC Safe Boating Test; Adults: GSSJC Safe Boating Test Certification; All ARC FUNdamentals of Canoeing practical skills and knowledge and demonstrate basic boat handling skills by solo paddling a set course, and paddling a straight line.
Cost: $20, includes meals but not book (No certifications needed, only skills.)
