Canoe Program is Looking for Volunteers
Do you love to canoe? GSSJC needs your help! The GSSJC canoe program needs dedicated volunteers to help plan and implement canoeing activities for girls and troops. Volunteers are needed to help take girls canoeing on Council property, go on trips, assist with courses, or anything else you want to do! If you do not have a Fundamentals of Canoeing (FOC) certification, that is okay. We are offering the FOC course in May. If you are interested or need further information, please contact Program Manager Sarah Boyd at 713-292-0269 or e-mail at sboyd@sjgs.org.

Update from a Vice Commodore

Hey Guys! It’s one of the lovely Vice Commodores (I’m Courtney, yes, Chelsea’s sister).
During the winters past, the Mariner program hasn’t really done much, save for a couple of annual events, but the 2004-2005 off-season has been incredibly busy. In December/November, we stuck it out through a work weekend and the actual weekend long event of the Christmas Boat Parade. Taking second and third places respectively, Kemah Barbie and Red Adair tribute boats shined brightly, along with the Wizard of Oz and Crustaceous Christmas boats. We also took home an “Old Salt” award, commemorating 11 years of boat parade participation. To ring in the New Year sailor style, the Mariners gathered in Columbus, Texas.
This year we have a lot of exciting things planned. For the Mariner GAM crew, we shall be the Popeyes (contact us at gscommodores@yahoo.com for info). Okay, so by now the big boat trip will have occurred, and knowing how much fun you guys are, I’m sure everyone who attended had the best of times; but we can talk about that later. Next up for this year’s non-sailing things is the recyclable items collection. You can donate all recyclables at camp in the office.
Lastly, this is an election year for commodores! We will need candidates for Vice Commodore and Commodore; so if you (or a friend) will be in tenth grade in the next school year, you are eligible to run! Make sure and e-mail us to get a nomination application. The person elected will lead your program for the next year. Please vote, because every vote truly counts. The person elected should probably be in attendance to mariner AND non-mariner events, so you would probably want to at least have met your candidate. This isn’t a popularity contest, and voting is confidential, so please vote for the person you feel will appropriately represent you.
Well, that’s it for my winter off-season update, see you all come the first weekend of the season! - Courtney, One of the Vices.
