GAM EVENTS

Note: Events marked with ** will have a training session at the GAM training dates.

Event #1
**Crew Banner & T-shirt
Card Requirements: None
Number of Participants: Min. 2 per Crew

The crew banner and T-shirt should be designed and constructed prior to arriving at GAM. They should both bear the crew name and be representative of the crew in color and theme. The banner should not be larger than 50” long and 50” wide. The banner will be carried by two crew members during the opening ceremonies. You need to bring materials to support and display your banner. The crew T-shirt must be worn during opening ceremonies and during the judging. The banner can then be displayed at your home base throughout the day. Judging will be take place in the lodge at time assigned to your crew on the day of GAM. Points will be awarded for creativity, originality, craftsmanship, and theme. It can be constructed of any material. The winning banner will have the honor of being hung in the Casa Mare Lodge! It can be constructed of any material – be creative.

Event #2
Sea Chanteys
Card Requirement: None
Number of Participants: Entire Crew

Each chantey must have a title – report this to the judge upon entering the event! The tune may be “borrowed,” but the words must be original and the chantey must have at least three verses. No musical accompaniment, either live or recorded, is allowed; however, actions representing the chantey are encouraged. Judging will be based on originality, creativity, and arrangement. The winning sea chanteys will be selected to perform at the closing ceremonies.

Event #3
Beach Ball Bonkers
Card Requirement: None
Number of Participants: 4 per Crew

Two crew members alternate maneuvering a beach ball through an obstacle course. At the end of the course, two different crew members will alternate maneuvering the ball through the course again. This event is timed.

Event #4
**Sunfish Rigging
Card Requirement: None
Number of Participants: 3 per Crew

Juniors rig in groups of three, Cadettes and Seniors rig with two members blindfolded and one member giving directions. Crews begin at a starting line, go the boat, and complete the rigging. The event captain will check the rigging and knots and give the okay to derig the boat. The team will then derig the boat and coil all lines. Blindfolds may be taken off during derigging. Each crew has 20 minutes to complete the event. Points will be awarded for teamwork, enthusiasm, and neatness of coiled lines.

Event #5
Pool Olympics
Card Requirement: Level III Swim Cards
Number of Participants: 4 per Crew

Each crew member swims the length of the pool. Each lap will be different and all necessary supplies for the relay will be provided. This event is timed.

Event #6
Deep Water Relay
Card Requirement: Level III Swim Cards
Number of Participants: 4 per Crew

Each crew member will retrieve an item from the bottom of the pool in a specific order. All supplies for the relay will be provided. This event is timed.

Event #7
**Knotting Hill
Card Requirement: None
Number of Participants: 6 per Crew

Each crew member will run from the starting line to their knot post and tie a specific knot, then run back to the start and tag the next crewmember in line. This continues until all required knots are tied. If your crew has less than six members, some crewmembers will run more than once. Points will be awarded for time and correctness of the knots. Knots will be tied in the order listed below using a limited amount of rope:

§ Bowline onto a mooring line
§ Clove hitch on the post
§ Two half hitches on the clove hitch
§ Figure 8 at the end of any line
§ Square knot using two lines
§ Sheet bend using two lines

Event #8
Landlubber Sail
Card Requirement: None
Number of Participants: Min 2 per Crew

Crew will make an origami boat, attach it to a line and “race” it. All materials and instructions will be provided. This event is judged on time, teamwork, and creativity.

Event #9
Duck Walk
Card Requirement: None
Number of Participants: 5 per Crew

The game uses two boards with long ropes attached. The crew stands one behind the other, with one foot on each board, and one hand on each rope. The crew then “walks” the course. This event is judged on time and teamwork.

Event #10
Float a Boat
Card Requirement: Level IV Swim Card
Safe Boater Card
Number of Participants: Juniors 2-4 per Crew
Cadettes/Seniors 2 per Crew

This event takes place in the bay, thus crews must wear life jackets and closed toed shoes. Each homemade “boat” entry must have a maximum size of 5’ by 10’ and must be made from recycled materials. All participants must be on or in the “boat.” Crews propel their boat around a waterfront course using hands or oars to paddle. No motors will be allowed and no one may be tied to the boat.
