SPURS Training Information
SPURS (Super People Using Riding Skills) training is offered to Girl Scouts who are 13 years old or in the 7th Grade and above and adults who are interested in learning more about horses and helping with the Equitation Program at Camp Misty Meadows. Attending one Theory Workshop (classroom session) and the Saturday day training at Camp Misty Meadows is required for participation in the SPURS program. At camp they will receive hands-on practice with the horses.
Adults taking this training will receive their theory at camp. All adults wishing to take this training MUST follow the same registration procedure as the girls.
Since the training at Camp Misty Meadows is an all-day workshop, all trainees should bring a sack lunch and beverage, clearly labeled with the attendee’s name. Small personal coolers are okay; large ice chests cannot be accommodated due to space restrictions.
For theory workshop date, please indicate your first and second choice. Unless notified otherwise, attend your first choice date.

Adults in Equitation
The Equitation Program needs registered Girl Scout adults to volunteer in two distinct areas of Equitation:

Riding Staff: Riding staff is needed to learn and then teach proper safety, horse care, and riding skills to the Girl Scouts taking part in the program. Formal instruction is provided as Saturday day training: one is held in October and another session is in February. Please check The Golden Link for specific training dates and information. There may also be adult training held on different weekends throughout the year as the need arises.

Dorm Staff: The Equitation program also welcomes all registered adults who may enjoy a weekend at camp with Girl Scouts 13 and older, yet prefer not to work with horses. Every troop camping weekend during the year, the SPURS girls need two adult unit leaders as dorm staff, one of whom must be a currently certified First Aider.

If this sounds interesting, please contact George Ann Barrett, program manager, at 713-292-0313 or gabarrett@sjgs.org to obtain an information packet for either riding or dorm staff.

All Senior Girl Scouts are welcome to join the Senior Senate. If you are interested in have a great time with other girls doing service projects, girl planning boards and hosting the teen weekend.

The first Senate meeting will be held on September 25 at the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council office.

Archery

Bulls-eye
Individual and troop archery instruction is offered at Camps Casa Mare, Misty Meadows, Silver Springs, Robinwood, Agnes Arnold, and Whispering Pines. Instruction is based upon individual skills level and prior experience. All instruction takes place on the archery range so dress for the outdoors. This is a perfect activity for a day trip to camp or for camping troops.

The Bulls-eye program includes a patch or rocker for each girl who participates. If it is a girl’s first time to participate in a Bulls-eye session she will receive a patch; after that girls receive a rocker to begin to build their own “Bulls-eye.” Once a troop has participated in the event, contact Nicole McInnes at 713-292-0353 or nmcinnes@sjgs.org to have patches mailed.
