Happy Birthday to the founder of Girl Scouts
and a great American woman

When Girl Scouts visit my office, I like to share a book entitled Remember the Ladies, 100 Great American Women. Number 46 is Juliette Gordon “Daisy” Low. Her description states that she started Girl Scouts in 1912 “to help girls become self-reliant and independent.”

Daisy was an interesting lady to say the least. There are many stories concerning her eccentricities and escapades. Her mother called them “Daisy’s stunts.” She wore real fruit in her hat, stood on her head to show off the Girl Scout shoes, invited guests to a party and then forgot about it, went fishing in full evening dress, and drove on the right side of the road in England “because I’m American.” She filed her bills in four envelopes that said “This Year,” “Next Year,” “Some Time,” and “Never.” I think that I would have liked Daisy.

It should also be noted that Ms. Low was artistic and there are many examples of her work in Savannah, GA. Troops that have visited her home may have seen the gate at her house or some of her bronze statues. Her friends all thought that she was generous and kind. The story of selling her pearls to help her new organization is a classic.

I think one of her greatest talents was that of being a visionary. She envisioned an organization for the girls of Savannah, all America, and the world. She started with one patrol in Savannah and lived to see the headquarters in New York City and the gift of land in Briarcliff, NY for a camp and conference center. Because of her passion for Girl Scouts, she would be overjoyed to see how Girl Scouts has evolved and how it has changed and kept up with the times.

Juliette Gordon Low’s birthday is October 31. Honor her with a special activity. Have a party. She would have loved that. Read her autobiography. Learn a skill that Juliette might have taught her girls. Take a docent tour of the Girl Scout headquarters on the Southwest Freeway.

What a great American woman! The book is right. Ninety-two years later we are still sharing the legacy of Juliette
Gordon Low.
