Adults in Equitation

The Equitation Program needs registered Girl Scout adults to volunteer in two distinct areas of Equitation:
Riding Staff: Riding staff is needed to learn and then teach proper safety, horse care, and riding skills to the Girl Scouts taking part in the program. Formal instruction is provided as Saturday day training: one is held in October and another session is in February. Please check The Golden Link for specific training dates and information. There may also be adult training held on different weekends throughout the year as the need arises.
Dorm Staff: The Equitation program also welcomes all registered adults who may enjoy a weekend at camp with Girl Scouts 13 and older, yet prefer not to work with horses. Every troop camping weekend during the year, the SPURS girls need two adult unit leaders as dorm staff, one of whom must be a currently certified First Aider.
If this sounds interesting, contact George Ann Barrett, program manager, at 713-292-0313 or gabarrett@sjgs.org to obtain an information packet for either riding or dorm staff.

This is a NON-RIDING workshop designed to provide information and materials so girls can complete the badge on their own or at a troop meeting. Troops and Juliettes (individually registered Girl Scouts) may register; adult-to-girl ratios must be maintained and a First Aider must be present with troops; Juliettes must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, who must remain in the area during the session. Register for ONE time and ONE date.

GAM 2005

GAM is April 23, 2005
GAM is a wide game event to be held at Camp Casa Mare. It is open to all Juniors, Cadettes, and Senior Girl Scouts.
Crews compete throughout the day to have fun and win awards. Each crew is made up of 5-10 girls. They can be from the same troop or from several troops. The crew leader can be the troop leader or another registered adult Girl Scout. Many crews will have girls of mixed levels. One troop can register more than one crew! Most events need 4 girls.
Crews will create their own names and identities. You will register your crew using this name and all communications will be sent using this crew name. Some past crews were the “little mermaids,” “sea dragons,” and “dancing dolphins.” You may also create a banner and T-shirt that will represent your crew!
Some events require swim cards, safe boater cards and/or sail cards, but many do not require anything but a wish to have fun! But, don’t delay! Get those swim cards updated and take the Safe Boat Test with your girls!
Four trainings will be held and will cover knots, sunfish rigging, nautical flags and lashings. The trainings are recommended for girls and leaders who have not previously attended GAM. However, attending a training is not a requirement. The final training dates will be in a future issue of The Golden Link.
The deadline to register for GAM is February 15, 2005! Questions, contact Sarah Boyd, 713-292-0269 or sboyd@sjgs.org. Look in the September issue of The Golden Link for a list of events.
