Horseback Riding

General Horseback Riding Information
This program is offered to individual girls or troops, Junior level and older, in San Jacinto Council. All riding programs are staffed with volunteer adults and older girls who have had Council training in safe handling of horses and riders. The appropriate ratio of troop adults according to Safety-Wise including the troop’s certified first aider must accompany all riders to the riding area and remain in the area while their girls are riding.

Riders should be at the Boot and Helmet Room in the Barn at Misty Meadows at least 30 minutes before their scheduled ride times. Late arrivals will result in a shortened ride. Riders must wear long pants and suitable camp attire (socks, tee-shirt or shirt with sleeves covering the shoulders). Helmets and boots are available. Girls bringing their own helmets must show a SEI certification label; boots must be smooth-soled with at least a 1/2" heel. Lug soles are not allowed.

Registration deadlines must be met for participants to expect placement in a program. The deadline for all riding events is three weeks prior to the event. Troops camping in Misty Meadows have priority placement for riding slots. All riding programs have maximum capacities listed; these limits are strictly followed. Girls have priority over adults for riding slots.

Weekend Camper Riding
Troops/groups (Junior Girl Scouts and older) camping at Misty Meadows, Arnold, Silver Springs, or Robinwood who wish to ride during their weekend at camp should send in the “Request for Riding Form” included with their camp date confirmation immediately on receipt. These are 45-minute ride periods, either in an arena or on a trail, depending on the skill level of the riders (determined by the volunteer Riding Director in charge during the ride). Either a Saturday or Sunday (morning) ride time may be requested. Troop adults may ride with their girls if space permits; no tagalongs may ride. Girls have priority placement over adults.

Fee: $10 per rider
Event Code: 10-56-09-6235
Maximum: 12 riders per 45-minute session

Troops/groups or Juliettes who wish to ride at Misty Meadows should send in the “Program Registration Form.” These are 45-minute ride periods, either in an arena or on a trail, depending on the skill level of the riders (determined by the volunteer Riding Director in charge during the ride). Baroness

by C2 (Carol Coates)

Why was she named so, long ago?
Bloodlines perhaps, or hope to show.
Whatever cause, the name portrayed
The grace and pride she oft displayed.

Cue to canter; she’d gather herself;
Flying or gliding, it was hard to tell.
I loved her flight to watch or ride,
But most of all I loved her pride.

No one’s horse, aloof, alone,
For power and strength she’d been known.
Some thought her stubborn who made demands,
But for those who asked, soft in hand.

Like the horse, the clouds were gray
On that steamy, sultry summer day.
Long the night had been with little rest
For worried watchers and for Baroness.

Still I clung to hope, so slight,
That day might bring good news that fled the night.
Not so; away raced hope as day dragged by,
The time had come for hard good byes.

Hence forth look close when the sky is gray;
She runs on the wind both night and day.
Never tired; no need for rest.
Fly, fly, proud Baroness.

This is a picture of Baroness, a horse GSSJC lost this summer. The poem was written by Carol Coats (C2), the summer riding director. The rider on Baroness is Angela W., a long time member of SPURS.
