Time for girls to learn about Government

by Diana Artale

This year girls across the nation will see democracy in action – with a major presidential election and, the important selection of the many government officials who lead our great country. Girl Scouts of the USA offers ways to help your troops/groups experience citizenship and a keen sense of what it means to live in the United States.

Learning about Government – Partnership for Trust in Government is a special GSUSA patch program that includes activities designed to help girls explore government and the roles they can play in making government work for them. This program is being discontinued, so THIS is the year for all program levels to participate if they would like to. (Available at Girl Scout Shop.)
For example, at the Junior Girl Scout program level girls will:

1. have a virtual tour the White House from home through the White House Web site.
2. identify laws affecting them as young people and discuss their fairness.
3. design a service project addressing issues facing their communities.

Another voting patch program is Project V.O.T.E. (Voters Of Tomorrow through Education). It was developed for girls across the state by the Lone Star Girl Scout Council of Austin, Texas in partnership with the State of Texas. This patch program explores voting – how to register to vote, why it is important to vote, how to use a ballot, and who is elected through a vote. Form F-16 has the requirements and patch ordering information for Project V.O.T.E. It is available at the Girl Scout Center or visit www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/project vote/girlscoutpatch.htm.
