The Pidd Miller Doll Award recognizes and encourages the art and imagination associated with doll collecting. Generously underwritten by Dr. Pidd Miller, this award is given annually to up to five registered Girl Scouts in San Jacinto Council, one from each program level. Each award recipient receives a $100 cash prize, an award certificate, and recognition in The Golden Link. Applications for the award include a photo or drawing of the girl and her doll(s), and an essay about “What doll collecting means to me.”

This is my Holiday Barbie from 1998. She is my favorite. I love her more than anything. I love collecting Barbie dolls. I am going to keep them forever.

The thing that dolls mean to me, they’re like friends to me. When I need them, they’re there. They are like friends that never tell secrets. When I’m down, they’re right there to cheer me up. They’re like friends to everybody. They’re not just my friend, they’re everybody’s friends. I use my dolls and their doll house to make up stories. The stories help me solve my problems. I love my dolls very much because they never let me down.

Junior Girl Scout Livia M.
Doll collecting means a lot to me. Every summer, my family and I go to places out of Texas. To remember that state or country and the experiences I’ve had there, I pick up a doll. When I get home from my trip, I tell all the adventures I had with my new doll. So I think of buying a doll as buying a story ready to be told. For example, whenever my friends came over, I would pick up Sacajawea and tell how she played a major role in Lewis and Clark’s expedition and how important she was. I have many different types of dolls from different places. Such as, I got a handmade yarn doll and China doll from Italy. Some others I have are a Dutch doll from Holland and three Indian dolls from Arizona (one of which I drew). I also have a big responsibility when I collect dolls. I have to pay for every doll except for the ones friends and family have given me. I think this shows that I’m serious about doll collecting. There is also a very interesting doll the Queen Elizabeth doll. My mom gave me her (which WAS hers) from England where I have not yet been to. So one day hopefully I will go to England and when I come back, I will have a tale for that doll too. My Girl Scout troop was lucky enough to visit a woman here in Houston, Texas who has been collecting dolls for over 20 years and has about four thousand dolls! She has inspired me and is my role model. She made me want to keep on collecting dolls and the stories that go with them. One place I really want to go is Egypt and while I’m there, I want to buy a Cleopatra doll. When I get home, I’ll tell about Egypt using Cleo like I’ve done with other dolls in the past. With all this in mind I want to keep on collecting dolls and sharing stories with others about my adventures as long as I live. That’s how much doll collecting means to me.

Doll collecting means many things to me but a few in particular stand out to me. One reason I love to collect dolls is I know that it is something I will be able to continue to do through my life and something I can share with my children when I grow up. Also, doll collecting to me, is a way to stay in touch with my childhood which is important to me because many kids spend their childhood wishing they were older and trying to act older and never getting to be kids. My dolls mean a lot to me because I have paid for all my dolls with my own money that I have earned by babysitting which has taught me to set a goal and work for it.
