Grandpa Bob’s Brain Teasers

Why does the sky turn colors at sunset? Gas molecules, floating dust particles and other specks of this and that drifting in the sky are the reasons. Here’s how it works. The light from the sun is white light. White light contains many colors, all the colors of the rainbow. As the sun nears the horizon, its light must pass through the heavier blanket of air near the ground. As it encounters many more air molecules, and everything in it, these molecules act as a prism and split the white light of the sun into its many colors. When the sun is above the horizon the primary color reflected is blue. As it gets closer to the horizon the primary colors we see are oranges and reds.

Here’s another question for you: How is earth like a magnet?

Do you have an interesting tidbit or piece of information that might be of interest to our readers? If so, send it to me and I’ll share it in the Around Camp Column. I’ll be sure to mention your name too.

Camp Agnes Arnold Nature Trail completed!

The last of four phases of the Nature Trail project at Camp Agnes Arnold is completed. This last section of the trail is the bridge across the top of Shadow Lake. Now it is possible to walk completely around the lake without having to backtrack. We’ve all waited a long time for this and thanks to the folks at UPS (United Parcel Service) and the hard work and years of planning by our own staff, the project is completed. I’m getting excited about it as are the many folks who have been involved in making this a reality over the course of the last four years.

It’s a girl!

The latest addition to the herd at Camp Misty Meadows arrived in the wee hours of August 30. Sheza gave birth to a beautiful, bouncing baby girl! The as-yet-unnamed filly was sired by a Paint, and thus has gorgeous Paint markings.
Needless to say, all the SPURS girls, adults, and Council staff are beside themselves with happiness over our new “baby.” Stop by the barn next time your troop is at camp, and meet our new addition.
